WPG, URL Verification - 9/11/2002 16:09:26
quote:

A quick note for those using WPG. Do not use the URL verification feature. This is like sticking a target on the website that you are checking ranking for. If you do this and have Google selected, that website you are checking rank for could end up with a PR0 penalty.

If you must run reports, deselect Google from the queries. Your Yahoo results will show how well you may be positioned in Google since Yahoo utilizes Google results for its web pages.

Any recommendations about undoing the damage for this? I just upgraded to WPG 2.0 and have run one report this way and you' re right PR is now 0. Is this a timing issue? I don' t normally use the tool this way, but have been playing with the upgrade. Sigh!

Hello Nancy, that was a comment that I made in another recent post. Many things affect PageRank or what is referred to as PR. It could be coincidence that something else is the cause and you just happen to be running reports at the same time. There is much more involved in just running one report with that feature checked. If it were a case of instant PR penalty, then competitors could easily run reports and have you penalized. No, it takes a little more abuse than that.

The main causes of PR penalties are...

1. Hidden Links
2. Heavy Crosslinking between Sites
3. Links to bad neighborhoods (Google slang PR0).

Those seem to be the most popular. There are others and you' ve got to be very careful when developing sites to rank highly in their respective industries. If you think its a trick, it probably is and I would suggest not using it.

In regards to WPG, just be careful how you use the program and do some online research about the Do' s and Don' ts. Google clearly states in their TOS (Terms of Service) that they do not want to be bombarded with automated queries from rank checking software and they will ban you if you get abusive. Its a drain on system resources.

The common consensus is that you should run the program at its slowest or optimum query intervals to prevent leaving a footprint. Queries should be performed in the very early morning hours 0001 thru 0300 PST (Pacific Standard Time/California). Keep the keyword list to a minimum and deselect Google from the search. Do those by hand and provide them to the client as an addendum to the report.

In reality, none of the SE' s like these types of programs. They are abused and just imagine what type of resources are needed when someone is performing searches for 100 keywords in the first 30 SERP' s (Search Engine Results Pages) at 10-20 second intervals. Now, multiply that by the number of WPG users which is quite high, I would call that a Denial of Service attack. You have to tread lightly and play by the basic rules.

Thanks. I too, do SEO work and have always been *very* careful with the tools I use. I probably only resort to that software once a month.

I panicked prematurely after reading your post. The PR for my site is OK. I guess it was a problem with the browser/Google.

Curious how MarketLeap gets away with querying Google...

I recall reading somewhere that 90% of a search engines resources are due to querying tools. Don' t know how accurate that is, but it wouldn' t surprise me!

Thanks for your prompt response. My heart beat has returned to normal now!
