Please remember, that this is a client side function.
You can also browse the page code to find the hidden password, so it isnt actually secure at all

Hit a JavaScript site and find a script that does password protection.....or use FP' s password protection or can you do password protected directories?

Well I make a form box with the submit button and reset, I take out the reset and change the path of the submit. And when i put a one line textbox in, i choose its properties click password field, hit validate, go down to the bottom and make it so it must be equal to a certain number, but if you get that number wrong, a error box will pop up saying " Please enter a number equal to " The Real Password" in the " The Name Of The Text Box Field" . So, no matter what, your gonna get into the members page, i want to change that. :)

I wouldn' t use FP validation. The best method would be to make the members section part of a subweb and create a username and password for members by editing the page live.

Since I believe you are using Geocities as your host, that isn' t an option. (In fact, I believe it' s against the Terns Of Servuce to actually put a password on the site at all.)

The next best solution is the Spooky Login. But you would need to be able to use ASP for that, and I don' t think Geocities supports ASP, either.

My next suggestion would then be a JavaScript. You can find a free one to use by doing a search in one of the main search engines. I' ll save you some trouble and give you a link to a script source for this:

http://developer.irt.org/script/password.htm

Can you give me some more info on how to set up a subweb and how to password protect it?

I' ve tried but it didn' t work like it should. What I did:

- made a new folder
- put the pages in the folder
- selected the folder and converted it to a web
- published the site again

now I believe the adress had to becom something like:

http://www.originalsite.subweb.com

is it?

Or what am I doing wrong. Am I doing anything wright at all????

you can see I' m in deep. Please help me out.

thx

Hi Smirnie,

Everything you have done is right. But, the address you have is wrong. The address usually looks like this. http://www.yourdomain.com/Subweb

To actually password protect the Subweb, first open the site live ( File > Open Web, and type your website address in the " Web Name" field. Type in your username and password. Now you have your site open live.

If you click on the Folder List (View > Folders), you should be able to see your Subweb. Then double click on your Subweb folder. A new window for FrontPage should open up, showing your Subweb and it' s folders.

Once it' s open click on Tools > Permissions. Once you' re there, turn off Anonymous Access. Then go to Administration, and change the subweb permissions to " Using Unique Permissions."

Does this work?

Regards,

Rio :)

nope,

Is it possible that I have to publish the sub-web separately from the main web?

I mean, do I have to double click the sub-web to open it in FP and than publish is or is it automatically published whe I publish the main web.

I' m asking this because I do not want to risk overwriting all the data already on the server.

Excuse me my poor English but like I said in my bottom text " I,' m trying, I' m trying,..."

Sorry,

You' ve got a real dummy opver here. Ive now managed to find a little option in my publish screen which is named: " include subwebs" . I think that' s what I' m looking for.

I' ll give the following steps a go.

OK,

I,m half way there. (I think). Ive got my subweb. I know where to put in aditional users. One problem when I put them in e.g. login ' A' , pass ' AA' and I try to save. FP gives an error: error removin one or more users. the following user does not exist:" a" .

Can' t i just add a new user? Or do I have to use the pass and login of the first web. I do not want to do that because the users than can change my whole site. Or can i change the existing login and pass just for the subweb? Than again they will have all rights on the subweband I do not want that.

I marked the question ' unique permissions for this web' (I think it' s claaed like this but i don' t know for sure because I have a Dutch version.

Hi Smirnie,

So you know how to add users by going through the " Administration Home" page for your Subweb, and clicking on Manage Users, and adding users there?

Could you please elaborate on your previous post. Your post views that when you try to add users and save, FrontPage gives an error saying:

(" error removin one or more users. the following user does not exist:" a" .)

Also, the process I usually go through to add users goes like this.

1) Add Users
2) Type in Username
3) Type in password
4) Type in password to confirm
5) Choose role. (I choose Browser)
6) Then click on Add User.

FrontPage then saves settings, then redirects to your Manage Users page.

Rio :)

P.s Try it again and tell me what happens.

I follow the same steps for the second part of your post. The first part bothers me though. What do you mean with the part of the administration home?

Do I have to make a new login and pass at my servers administration page first or what?

Sorry about that. I was just saying that the " Administration Home" page is just the page where you change permissions, manage users, change roles etc.

To get to it, simply open up your website live, and then open up your Subweb. Once in your Subweb, go to Tools > Server > Administration Home. If you can see Manage Users within that page, that' s good. That' s where you can make your changes.

Sorry to confuse you. [:j]:)

Rio:)

P.s. Were you able to add users?

So the administration home is a screen within FP?

If it is. It doesnt work. I always get that blasted error message. Is it possible that my host doesn' t allow me to create a new login and pass for a subweb?

No...the " Administration Home" Page is not a screen within FP. The " Administration Home" Page opens up into a new browser window, when you go to Tools > Server > Administration Home.

Can you tell me exactly what you do step by step, to try and add new users?

I' m also not sure about your host. If you think it might be your host, just contact them and see what they say.

Keep me updated.

It Seems I can' t find the administration homepage. OK this what I do. Step by step. (I don' t know if everything is correct since I have a dutch version and I' ll have to translate)

I...
open FP
Select file>open web
put in the URL of the subweb
I get asked a login and a password (those from the main web)

The site is opened (live I guess) in FP

I...
select " extra" (tools in English???)
select " beveiliging" (security in english???)
select " machtigingen" (permissions in english???)
select tab " settings"
select using unique permissions
select tab " users"
choose " add user"
select " browse only"
give up a login
give up a password
confirm password

press OK

Save

get: " server error: error removin one or more users. the following user does not exist:" a" .

Hi Smirnie,

When the site is opened live and you go under

" select " extra" (tools in English???)
select " beveiliging" (security in english???) "

Underneath " beveiliging" (you say security in english), are there any other options underneath this category? Anything relating to Administration Home or Home? If there is, have you tried any other options under this category.

When you open your site live, are you in your Subweb?

The problem might be actually be with your host, like you said previously. Have you contacted them and asked them why you could not add users to your Subweb?

I' ve never come pass a problem like this, but I am determined to help you to the end.

Regards,

Rio.

P.s. Could you also please confirm this. You' ve already created your Subweb, published it, disabled Anonymous Access, and changed your Subweb to use unique permissions. So you' ve actually got your Subweb folder password protected, you just need to add users.

Also, do you think you might have to add users through your control panel your WebHost provides you when you join them.

I did a search at microsoft' s website and found this. I think this might work! The keyword I used was " error users." It relates to your problem.

Tell me if it works or not.

Sorry to interrupt, but will this way be protected from the FP search feature?

quote:

Please remember, that this is a client side function.
You can also browse the page code to find the hidden password, so it isn' t actually secure at all

I have done some ASP pages, but they show up in the FP site search (as Spooky said) and that' s not good enough protection. I wonder if I should be doing what you are talking about here. Is there a beginners tutorial to get started?

Hi Momx4,

I' m not sure about your first question, but if you consider password protecting part of your website, I suggest starting on this tutorial OutFront has under their tutorials section. I think their tutorials are such a great help! :):)

If you need any help, just post here.
