The Internet is no longer free! Remember the days of free listings with the major search engines? They' re gone, well, almost gone. Much has changed in the past 18 months with the search engines and directories. Remember Yahoo! Well, they are still around. They are no longer the dominating force in the search industry that they used to be. Google has claimed King of the Hill and will probably remain there for a while. Infoseek used to have that title, so did Alta Vista. Power changes hands in the search industry just as it does in the rest of the world. If you are a site owner and depend on that site to generate your main income, then you need to set aside a budget for PPC - Pay Per Click, CPC - Cost Per Click keyword bid campaigns or PFI - Pay For Inclusion programs. This does not mean that your site can bypass optimization. In the PFI programs, you are only paying for inclusion into a database. You are not paying for positioning. If your site is not optimized, don' t even bother with PFI. Examples of PFI would be Alta Vista and Inktomi. With PPC - Pay Per Click or CPC - Cost Per Click, you bid on selected keywords and phrases with other companies. Depending on the competitiveness of the terms you are targeting, will determine whether or not you can acheive ROI - Return On Investment based on the keyword bid amounts. If you are in that position, and an ROI can not be realized, then go after less competitive terms that will still bring quality traffic. Examples of PPC would be Overture, Findwhat and Kanoodle. There are many more. The only example of CPC is Google, that is their program acronym. There are still a handful of free resources that can bring quality traffic to your websites. Google of course is the #1 source of traffic for most sites these days. Google continues to secure business relationships that provide its results to major Internet properties. This is the #1 reason why your site must be optimized. We know Google' s main algo is centered around PageRank. But, without optimization, you would not be utilizing PageRank to its fullest. If you are going to survive on today' s Internet, you need to plan your strategy and work with a professional. Sure, you can learn this yourself, but, is it worth it? I' ve seen some say that this is not rocket science. Well, its not. But, it does require knowledge. SEO - Search Engine Optimization and SEM - Search Engine Marketing, are just like any other profession. You go to a professional when you need something done that you cannot do yourself. If you are on a tight budget, then you may not have a choice and will need to submerse yourself in all things SEO/SEM. Get ready for information overload. P.S. 95% of your traffic will come from the Internet' s top ten search properties. Don' t bother with the rest, focus your efforts on the targeted resources for your industry. Stay away from submissions to hundreds, thousands or tens of thousands of search engines. There are less than ten quality submission resources that I' m aware of.
