MomX4 checking in with MomX5. Any luck with the includes?

EWD -> RE: Front Page Includes (10/7/2002 14:11:53)

I' ve been trying to teach the concept to someone myself. The light bulb went on for them when I explained it as though the include was a book in the library. Rather than each individual person (each page) having their own copy of the book (the included element), each individual goes to the library to get it when it' s needed (when the page is displayed).

My 2 cents about includes: I' ve used FP' s " includes" , Dreamweaver' s " library items" and GoLive' s " components" and found Front Page' s includes the easiest by far, with the possible exception of straight SSI. The other two editors force you to re-upload every page that calls the included element once you' ve changed it. I don' t want to revisit the FP v. Dreamweaver discussion, but if my conclusion is incorrect I' d appreciate knowing about it. [:)]

As far as I know, you cannot select a site from outside your web to include, unless you' re using PHP.

You are right in a way except that using templates in Dreamweaver means that every part of the page can be altered except the bit with content. I suppose you could look at it that when using a DW template everything bar the content is included from a single source. That can be very useful.

I might be incorrect but I believe you can include from anywhere so long as you have the absolute url. The include is not something which is native to FrontPage.

Using either FP includes or SSI you can only include content from the same site.

PHP includes do allow you to include content from elsewhere however.

But I know in other threads that I' ve read, you said you wanted to learn some of this stuff without relying on a program in the beginning.

Gail I was just going over this thread again when I noticed this. You can have includes pages even when you are doing a web out of fp???!!! Wow I could imagine the time saving on that one with all the coding!
