Newbie Needs Advise - 4/6/2001 23:53:00
Situation: I need to create forms that dump submitted info into an Access database. Host server is Unix/Apache, will not install FP extensions, and we have a year contract so I can't go elsewhere.

What language do I need to learn to have this happen? Perl? CGI? PHP?

Thanks,
Dawn

Hi Dawn,
Php is often the language of choice for an Apache server, and some even have ASP from (I think it is) Chilisoft.
However, your problem is going to be the database. Access is a Windows technology, happy on a Windows server, but not really on a Unix server. You would normally get mySQL as a database solution, but ask your host what they provide support for.
If you really need to dump direct to an Access database, my guess is that you are looking at changing server. That, or someone had some links about converting between Access / mySQL database formats if someone can drag the link up.

All the best

Vince

Ahh..so the database resides on the webhost server.

Here's an example of what I thought could happen: A school visits our website to update their address information. They go to a page with a form on it, submit the new info, and that info would update OUR Access Database that we use at work. That's not possible, right?
