Server doesn' t remember FP password...? - 9/17/2002 13:58:59
Hi everyone,

I have recently changed servers and my host used Publish all Files including Subwebs to transfer the website over to the new server. All seemed to go well until .......

Problem 1) - The subwebs never made the new server. Not to much of an issue though but....

Problem 2) - When trying to access my website using FrontPage on the server, I can submit my username and password and create new files and folders, convert to subwebs and view and alter permissions - everything that is expected with Administrator access.
Browsers can view the site and submit information to forms, etc, which work.
Authors including myself (Administrator) cannot Publish to the site without having to repeatedly submit their username and password!

When trying to publish to the server or dragging files into it, the ' Password Required' window keeps popping up requesting the author to submit their username and pasword. Then Publishing stops until the requested information is submitted and then starts again once done.
This might happen several times when publishing and doesn' t appear related to file size or time duration.
On several occasions the server will close connection whilst on others it will allow the author to publish albeit repeatedly requesting username and password.

Has anyone else had similar experiences?

I wasn' t sure if it was the extensions but have been assured that they are okay. The site has been mirrored onto another server with different extensions and the problem exists there as well.
None of this came about before the transfer to the new server which adds to the confusion.

I' m now running out of ideas and despite searching through MSofts information base I cannot seem to resolve this.
My host seems to think it may well have something to do with our ISP' s (Ntl Broadband) and the server configuration but cannot find anything amiss.
They have successfully published to the site at their end which leads me to believe that it might be that - but then again ??

If anyone else has experienced similar problems or can offer a solution i would be grateful if they would let me know as I am running out of ideas (and hair) !

Thanks, Dave
Rian

Hi Dave,

Is the server Windows or Unix based? This sounds like a classic case if permissions set incorrectly on the server. Something your host will have to fix....

Rian :)

Hi Rian,

The server is an NT Windows with FP2002 extensions

Cheers for the reply, Dave

Just giving a quick update on this:

The server is a Windows 2000 and not NT as previously posted.

We have now managed to get around the problem by opening up port 8080 on the server and publishing through that.
The problem seems to be a conflict between my personal ISP and the server. My ISP feeds through a proxy server and it is this that is causing the FP password not to be remembered - exactly how I' m not sure but by publishing through the port it bypasses the proxy.

Not ideal but until we find a way around it,it' s better than nothing

Ah well, modern technology, :)

Dave
