New Site - 9/18/2002 9:10:31
Well here goes.
After fiddling with Frontpage and studying replies on this forum for several months I have finally taken the plunge, created my own website and advertised my authoring skills on the internet.
The site is :

www.toolmanweb.com

Any comments would be most welcome.

Be gentle with me....this is my first time you know:)

Cheers

I think it is a very good start. If you want some suggestions for development, here it goes so hold on.

On the site designs area, dont have the image be a link back home, it is a little confusing and very unneeded. For the examples link, I would definitely suggest not having the link go directly to a new site, but be like the other pages and have maybe a paragraph about how diverse a field you can serve. Then have links to an example site for one kind of business and one for another. That will give the customer more control over the site.

I would also include a phone number if not a physical address on the contact us page. finally, I would break out the legal page to have 2 things, 1 separate page for the legal contract writing, and one for the contract itself.

I would either include a fax AND address for the contract to be submitted to, or make a frontpage form and turn those lines into fields and make it a form that can be submitted to you. Then you can have them spill into a database that you keep your customers in already, and it in turn can populate a report to be printed for the official contract. I would recommend Access for your database, but you may know more about that.
:)
Good luck!

Nice start:

The spinning globe detracts from the professionalism of the site.

None of the toolbar links work - I get a 404 on all of them

The conten is all on the left side of my monitor - you might try centering everything for a cleaner look.

Thanks for the constructive comments.
I will be making revisions to the hyperlinks on the images - to be honest I thought I had removed them all!
I think that the suggestion about the examples link is excellent - wish I had thought of that.

Thanks for the help.
The menu buttons are java applets. I take it that you do not have this enabled on your PC.
How was the download speed?. I know that from previous posts your internet connection is relatively slow.
I made the globe spin as I thought the page was a little drab and needed something to catch the eye.

Many thanks both for taking the time to look.:)

Cheers

I have Java enabled, the links show up (the applet loads), but clicking on any of them returns a 404 error.

I' m on a T3 at work and a 968 DSL at home - is that relatively slow? The load time wasn' t bad, the Java applets slow it down some, but it' s still OK.

I don' t think it would be " drab" with a non-animated globe - and much more professional - IMHO :)

Hey Toolman

You need to get your hands on a copy of NN 4.7. This is what I get when I try to click on the links. Your background images aren' t showing up either.

Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the further information.
Looks like I will have to look at the Applet setup again.

Swirl
No I dont have netscape at the moment so I had no way to test the pages on it.
Hope to remedy this soon.
Do you know if the background image problem is caused by netscape and if I change the header to a flat .BMP or .JPG, will it fix it?

Many thanks to both of you for taking the time to look. :)

Cheers

Chris,

It' s not just NN4.7, the links don' t work in Opera 6.2, or the new NN 7.0. The uploaded image is NN 7.

Chris,

This image from Opera 6.2 may give a clue, note the URL in the image.

Chris,

I noticed this earlier and kept forgetting to comment. The home page needs a horizontal scroll to view the whole page. However, there is nothing there. It is only on the home page.

I believe the culprit lies in this entry: <table width=" 811" border=" 0" cellspacing=" 0" cellpadding=" 0" height=" 101" >

Chuck
Thanks for the info.
Following posts from Swirl and Gill I checked out the Applet properties and found the incorrect URL' s at about the same time that you posted them.
Hav' nt had time to fix them all yet though.
Did you get the missing background image problem that Swirl did?
I wondered if this was because I had the settings on Frontpage for IE only?
Any Ideas?

Thanks for taking the time to help :)

Cheers

That would be my guess since NN doesn' t play well with background images in cells or tables.

Looks like I need to amend my header then, as it is made up of an animated gif superimposed on a background bitmap.
A bit of diddling in paintshop pro required!

Thanks again for the help:)
