Add text to pages by users - 9/21/2002 8:37:24
First let me say I am 71, as green as the come on website design, HTML and just about everything else and just entered " cyberspace" to help fill the gap with the loss of my wife.
I am trying to design a free site at http://www.together.com.au where viewers can write directly to the pages. I do have a database at my server but cannot understand how to use it. Is it necessary? or is there some way text can be directly written to the pages? Using FP 2002.
It has taken me 6 weeks to just get the site in its basic state on to the server, please bear with me. Can anyone help? Thank you.

Hi,

There are two ways:

(One)
--------
Use frontpage Guestbook, change the form text as you like. This questbook writes to an html page which you can view. In this case you do not neet a database to view the text.

(Second)
-----------
Create your own form in Frontpage that has the fields that you like then let the form create the database. After that create a Database Results page which read the database listing the text ordered by the most recent ones.

On the confirmation page of the input form you can put a link to the Database Results page to enable the user go directly to read what has been written before.

I know that I am not detailed here, but I gave you two choices, select one, post a selection for me and I will help you complete it in no time.

I am sorry about the loss of your wife. Just choose your preference and I am with you.

Regards
Hisham

First I would need to know does your host support ASP or PHP?

Setting up a database as described is going to be one chore. It can be done within FrontPage with a great deal of effort. What your describing lends itself more towards a message board format or something like phpNuke which would be far easier to administer.

Hi,

CraigHalbert is right. I should' ve checked your server first.

Your server does not support ASP:

The site www.together.com.au is running Apache/1.3.26 (Unix) mod_perl/1.26 mod_throttle/2.11 PHP/4.1.0 FrontPage/4.0.4.3 mod_ssl/2.8.9 OpenSSL/0.9.6f on Linux. FAQ

It is a Unix with Frontpage Extensions. In this case you can use option (1) with no problem. In case you want database access, either use PHP or move to another Host to use ASP.

" The current host can install a software called chilisoft which enables Unix run ASP" .

Hi again,
I am obviously talking to a highly qualified man on the subject. I will take your advice and use option 1. Hopefully my knowledge will grow to use a database in time.
Thanks again
Regards

Hi Hisham,
Do I have to have a guestlog " submit" page for each of the other pages that can be added to. Or can I put a selection bar or some such thing so the writer can select which page the story is to go?
Thanks
Ken

Hi,

Do you mean that you want a different display page for each form?

Do you mean that you want one display page for all forms?

Hi,
Sorry I am not making myself very clear.
I would like to use the one form for all pages.
I have experimented with duplicating the " Submit " buttons on the one page and changing " Submit" to the name of the page to which I wish it to go. Then I will use the properties of that button and direct to the right url. Will this work?

If I have to use a different " guest log" page for each I will.

Regards
Ken

Hi Ken,

Suppose you have 3 subjects, you want to create a form for each and a log for each.

Subject(1)
create the form, then right click your mouse button inside the form and select form properties. Look at " Send To" " file Name" you will guestlog.htm. Change the page name " Guestlog.htm" into any other name that describe the subject, example " Obituary.htm" .

Subject(2)
Do the same and change the page name into the other subject, example " lost.htm"

Subject (3)
Do the same and change the page name into the other subject, exmaple " MissYou.htm"

In this case you have three forms with three different logs.

If you want the users who fill Miss you subject page to go and read, put a link to MissYou.htm.

Hope it answers your question

Hisham

RE: Add text to pages by users - 9/21/2002 10:46:13
Thank you Hisham,
I have now done that and it directs to the right page, thank you.
One final question, if I may, and I won' t worry you anymore. Is there any way I can control the placing of the message on the receiving page or should I remove all headers from the receiving pages and just use blank ones? If I put tables on the receiving pages will the messages go to the next cell.
I apologise for my ignorance and maybe stupid question in advance.
Thank you
Ken

Hi,

If you have a page with headings and sides.

I mean with logo on top or site name and you want to keep it. Just create one column table in the middle of the page, remove the table borders, then go to Insert>Web Component > Include Content >Include Page then select the page name " Guestlog.htm"

The guestlog will show in the middle of the page keeping your heading and side naviagation menu.

I mean. The page should have on top one row one column, under the heading the pages should be one row, 2 columns. The left column to hold the side navigation buttons, the second column will inlcude your guestlog page.

Dear Hisham,
You have answered all my questions. I am very appreciative.
Unfortunately I can' t test it until I upload as " previewing in browser" just brings up a FP error message. Ah! well, can' t have everything. You have been a fantastic help.
Goodnight and the best to you and yours.
Kind regards
Ken

RE: RE: Add text to pages by users - 9/21/2002 23:19:46
Hi Hisham,
I have created 6 FrontPage guestbook pages in my site. e.g. renamed them guest1log.htm, guest2log.htm, guest3log.htm etc etc. created the table in each page (obituary, pet, friend etc) as you suggested with links to appropriate guest log file in the single column table to receive the text.
Before I upload, will FrontPage extensions on my server accept more than one guest log file in the same web?
regards
Ken

Hi Ken,

It will why not.

Avoid renaming them Log1 log2. Name them Obituarylg, Petlg, Friendlg ..etc.

So, Obituary form will write to Obituarylg.htm.

Regards
Hisham
