Photoshop 7.0::Worth the cost to upgrade?! - 9/22/2002 8:04:51
Maybe I' m missing something but I haven' t been able to figure out what justifies the cost of the upgrade from 6.0 to 7.0. My Photoshop skill level is about mid-intermediate so maybe benefits reside in features I' m not familiar with. If you' re using Photoshop 7.0 I' d sure like to hear your thoughts on if you' ve found the upgrade worth the money. If so, why? thanks, gail

Good question. I use Photoshop daily in our business and this was an excellent upgrade for $99.00 (Amazon 149.99 with a 50 rebate and an additional rebate offer of 35 if you purchased a certain book so the book priced at 34.95was free). Being in the print business, there were several new features in 7 that we really liked like specialized brushes and the healing hand. From a web design side, the auto color is a nice one click feature which can do some really nice color enhancements for web work. (I don' t usually use it for print work). In addition, for web work, some of the changes in imageready were really nice. The changes to the rollover pallet made things much easier so I can see all states of the rollover at one time whereas before, it was not as easy. The image browser and the ability to store settings for pallet layout etc are also nice little enhancements. Overall, if you are a photoshop user, this seems like a nice upgrade at $99. But, I don' t know that there is anything compelling about it. If I were doing only web work, I would probably pass on it. Doing a ton of print work, it was worth it.

My opinion: If you' re not familiar with all that PhotoShop 6.0 can do I would suggest not investing in 7.0 until you know what it is you can and cannot do without. It' s like buying a car with heated seats when you live in California...kinda defeats the purpose. Or, as my father put it, it' s like buying a car without having a driver' s license. Again, I would suggest you go to the Adobe website, review some of the new and improved features and see if they apply to you.

Quite familiar with almost all the features which are of benefit to me. My question really isn' t about Photoshop features. I asked if the cost of the upgrade is worth it. The student price is $150, not $99 like the Amazon deal mentioned above. The $50 difference probably would have changed my view about questioning the value of the upgrade. garyb' s reply particularly hit the mark because he suggested who would most likely benefit from upgrading (a printer) as well as who might not (someone doing only web work). Incidently, I purchased 7.0 so my questions arose after using it a couple of weeks. gail

I was in a local computer and electronics superstore the other day and met their Adobe Rep. and asked a similar question. Basically after dodging the question and giving me the standard " well it is the latest version and you should always keep your software current" song and dance number he told me how great the new capabilities for restoring old photos were and that was worth the upgrade price alone. Don' t know about that, and don' t know if you are doing strictly web graphics if it is worth it or not..... for what I do with Photoshop, and from what I have heard for me personally it is not worth it yet....... Excuse me for providing an answer, but it does refer to the question of ' whether or not the upgrade is worth it?' and your question actually is about PhotoShop features. The features (as well as the base system) are what justify it being a new and improved version. Therefore, upgrading would give you access to the new features of PhotoShop 7. Unfortunately, you did not state in which medium you were using PhotoShop. So my answer was made accordingly. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused you.

ORIGINAL: Seventh I apologize for any confusion this may have caused you. You haven' t confused me at all, though I think semantics may have confused us both. My question, whether I framed it with enough clarity or not, is indeed about price. Also, it was intentionally generic. If I said I am a web designer, the dialog would concentrate on that; if I said I am a printer, it would have focused on that; same goes for a photographer or graphic designer. If you want to know what I do, just call me a mutt. I have some of all four, to varying degress, in my background. My question was really intended to be a philosophical one about pricing, not features. Every upgrade has improved and new features. The half-point upgrade from Photoshop 5.5 to 6.0, in my experience, was significant. I' m not convinced the one point step from 6.0 to 7.0 is. Do I feel the upgrade from 5.50 to 6.0 was worth about 150 bucks? Yes. $150 for 6.0 to 7.0? NO, I think Adobe overpriced it! I guess the best way to term it for me is " cartel" pricing. Adobe has the corner on the market and charges about the same for a not-so-major upgrade as they do for a major one. My opinion that the upgrade is overpriced is, of course, only my opinion. I do think that traveler98' s chat with the Adobe rep, and the reps double-speak response, focuses a bit of light on the heart of my question. gail

I personally found the upgrade to version 7 well worth the money, both for print work and for web work. Personally I think just the new File Browser is worth 100 bucks. Support for new wireless graphics is real nice especially with PDA' s getting more powerful and in being color now. The new " selected" rollover state and the streamlined rollover dialoge in ImageReady ROCKS! The healing brush in Photoshop is a dream for anyone doing any photo restoration and/or enhancing. Version 7 overall seems to be running very stable too. In my personal/professional opinion Photoshop 7 is well worth the money. I wish I worked for Adobe... mabey I could start to get some kinda commission for writing these.... :) Scott

Scott, Interesting points. Seems you all paid almost 35% less than the upgrade price at a college bookstore. This is unusual since prices for educational versions of software are almost always much less than retail. As previously mentioned, there would be no gripe if the student cost were $100, but it is not. Buyer beware. Thanks all for the great feedback. gail
