I need to backup certain directories for a yabb forum. I' ve been advised not to use FrontPage' s republish.

To be honest, I' ve never FTPed except using Internet Explorer. When I try to copy directories from the cgi-bin to my hard drive using IE, it doesn' t work. I can drag and drop individual files, but not an entire folder.

Here' s what I' ve been advised.

" Publish back to your hard drive everything in the cgi-bin/yabb directory. These will all be transferred in ascii mode. The images and help files are in your root directory if you want to back them up. If you back them up (images), you' ll need to transfer in binary mode ... help files in ascii mode."

Time to grasp the FTP nettle!!

Using FTP is not at all difficult. It will take you about 10 minutes to get the idea.

Download an evaluation copy of WS_FTP here.

When it is installed, open it. Click the New tab and enter the details for the site - ie

Host Name: yoursite.com
Username and Password

When it opens your site you will have 2 panes

- on the left is your computer, just browse to whatever folder you want to download to
- on the right are the folders in your site, browse to wherever you want to download from

Select what you want to download and hit the arrow between the 2 screend to do it.

It is that easy. You can choose the mode (ie ascii or binary) at the bottom of the screen.

Generally use ascii to move scripts and binary for images.

Any questions, get back here, but it is really very easy.

OK, I have a few before I even begin downloading.

First, do I have to spend more $$$ or is the LE version okay?

Second, I' d like to understand *why* this method is preferable over the other two, particularly why FrontPage' s republishing feature should not be used.

Have you tried it? I' m not familar with it.

I know the one abbeyvet recommended seems to be " the standard." I don' t usually like to mess with software that is not widely used or beta.

I use this from work and so do several of my workmates and we have no problems with it.[:)]
I must say though that I use the frontpage publish facility and not FTP for my own website.

Use the LE version of WS_FTP to get used to it, and for educational purposes, etc as listed, but if you plan to use this for your business you need to purchase the Pro version according to their license.

FP' s publishing feature will change permissions on your cgi pages and cause you a ton of problems. Avoid it for scripts!

Easy?! Excedrin headache #658.

Software is rather intuitive, eh? Not!

Well, I actually followed Katherine' s instructions and was able to download a file to my hard drive. But what' s all the other stuff that appears in the window when I look at the folder where it' s stored? Are they hidden files? [-a-], etc. Or are they symbols of the drives on my computer and if so, why are they in there?

And is it necessary for me to learn to use all the other buttons, cryptic words, etc. to use the program correctly?

I' d still like to understand why I' ve been advised to use ftp software instead of republishing with FrontPage. Doesn' t make sense, at least not at this point.

I just publish back from my ISP to a local web server (not to a disk-based web). This works well for me and is easier than FTP on a Frontpage web so you don' t get all the _vti folders you don' t want or need on your local copy.

Nettle it is. [:o]

I can' t believe this cryptic-looking little program makes me so nervous. Thus far I usually forget to select ascii and binary. [:j] I' ve read the help section on the " auto" button, but it doesn' t seem to apply.

I downloaded one folder in ascii mode but the image folder within came right along. Will the images be okay as far as if I ever had to reinstall them?

Can also upload files in the same manner? Can I upload anything created in FrontPage such as an .htm file or a folder and its contents?

I guess why I' m so nervous is because I' ve spent a lot of time on a project (YaBB forum), much longer than anyone expected including myself. I want to make sure everything is backed up correctly.

I still have no idea why I can' t republish with FrontPage, though I' ve been advised against doing so.

Any additional insights would be greatly appreciated. I' ve never used this program before.
