Forum Registration rules and policies - 10/2/2002 9:30:53
Many forums such as Outfront ask users to agree with rules and policies during the registration process.
What are some of the reasons for having such agreements? Are they primarily legal?

Naw, couldn' t enforce it.
You are referring to a tos (I believe it stands for Terms of Service but could be wrong). It is more for the boards and mods sake.
On one forum I read everyday the tos has a no URL posting rule. The mods have to edit, at least once a day a post. It shows who edited it, they then drop a link to the tos rule that was broken. Then if the poster says anything to the board admin off board the admin can say " Well when you signed up for an ID it was in our tos, sorry" .

I guess what I was wondering if they would serve as any legal protection in the event someone libels another person.
For the particular board I have in mind, real names are used. All participants belong to the same association. It is a closed, password protected board which no one can enter without being approved. It can not be browsed by casual visitors.
Though I shouldn' t be, I am often surprised at the nasty things people will post when things get " hot." I was simply wondering if the TOS, similar to what Tom uses, offers any type of legal protection.
