Nameservers - 10/5/2002 0:12:37
Hi, I would appreciate if someone could help me with some advice with regard nameservers. Is it possible to set up a nameserver without having a dedicated server. I have an account with a virtual host, but I have been told that I can have a nameserver if I havnt got a dedicated server. I need nameservers because I want to resell domains from my sites, but I dont want to spend thousands to do it. Can anyone help. thanks Zaphod

Have you checked that the people you are planning to resell domains for provide a nameserver for your use? I have not come accross a reseller plan that does not offer this.

Sorry about this but I didnt make myself very clear. I want to set up my own nameserver records e.g. ns1.mydomains.com and ns2.mydomains.com. I dont really want to reuse the dns records provided by my domain wholesaler as they then become identifyable to the person registering the domain, and I would like to build my own vast internet empire and not someone elses. I host several sites on a shared server at the moment, but my host tells me that it is not possible to get nameserver records of my own unless I purchase a dedicated server. thanks Zaphod

You can use a 3rd party DNS like zonelabs. Some hosts (mine, for example) offer a custom DNS program for the reasons you listed. You can pay a bit extra and they will set up nameservers with your domain name. Katherine, does WWD include DNS service as well as registration? I was wandering around the WWD site recently thinking I should sign up, but I didn' t see where you could manage any DNS other that what' s hosted on their servers.

There are nameservers available for anyone who is regsitering and just wants to park a domain. They do not provide a nameserver if you are actually going to host the site also, it would be assumed you would have one to use in that case. There is however the option when setting up the service to use your own nameservers alongside an " I will host the site with you" option in the registration form.
