Putting Pictures in Photogallery in FP - 10/7/2002 21:51:42
I' m working on a vacation web in front page. I have my pictures on one page done but I don' t like how they look when viewed from in the browser. They sort of look too compressed. What is a recomened compression and how do I go into this to change how the pictures are compressed. They look sort of pitted. It is sort of hard to explain how they look. All i know is that I' m not satisified with how they look in the browser when I preview them. I used IE6.

Are you using the thumbnail maker thing in FP? I' ve never found a way to make them look anything but yukky. I' m anxious to see if anyone knows of a resolution short of resizing them manually. Perhaps you could use Photoshop' s photo gallery maker?

EWD: You hit the nail on the head. I did go into a program and do the editing and they looked fine until I looked at them in the browser. ick. I actually just delted the whole thing. The next thing that I noticed was that my whole page was out of wack!! My backround was really large. and the rest of the page looked goofy. The way that the thing is laid out is that there is a map for the backround. Then there is a table on top of it that has all the information on it. I went into the html, however, nothing made sense to me. For some reason the table size was 890? I just cut the whole thing and I' ll retry tomorrow. growlllllll, just when I thought that my luck was going to chagne.lol.

Hi c1sissy, I really like FP2002 photogallery feature and I use it a lot on a website for an old navy ships association where there are a lot of photos. One thing I' ve found though is that it is essential to use a good editing program to compress and resize the photos before I even put them into FP. If you scan a standard 4x6 print you' re going to have a file size of anywhere from 1.5 to 2 MB. When getting photos from a scanner or my digital camera ready for the web, I first resize them (usually about 50% but you have to experiment), then I convert them to JPEG. With this process I can knock a 2MB photo down to about 25-30KB. When you thumbnail it, it makes it even smaller. I read somewhere around here that FP automatically compresses photos also so if you didn' t have a real good one to begin with it mightmake it worse. What you describe kinda sounds like some GIFs I' ve seen. Are you saving them as GIFs? That' s not good for photos. I use PSP 7 to do all my resizing and compressing and I love it. Dave

I agree with nowlkldy that the key to getting photos to look well is to edit them before importing into FrontPage. Question: How do you prepare your photos? So many things can be done to cause them to look yucky but yucky they don' t have to be. If you over tweak a photo it will significantly lose visual quality. If your photos look bad in IE or NN, they will look worse for AOL users because of the default image compression settings in its browser. There are many programs available to automate and batch process photos. If you really want to do a good job, though, you' ll need to do some work manually such as resize, crop, adjusting brightness and contrast, sharpen. A program like Photoshop lets you semi-automate processes via its " actions" palette. In the Photo Gallery Properties box you can resize, crop and rotate photos. Go to the Pictures tab, highlight a photo name, and then click " edit." If you don' t maintain the aspect ratio your photos will become bent out of shape. I know you were asking primarily about the Photo Gallery but here are a few tips on how to handle jpgs and gifs in FP. Once an image is imported into FP there are tools which, if used very sparingly, can further enhance an image. The tools in FP are NOT a substitute for preparing photos first. - click a photo and use the FP Pictures Toolbar (it needs to be checked in the View > toolbar menu and will pop up whenever you select an image and become hidden whenever you deselect an image) - adjust the size of thumbnails via the Tools menu > Options > Page Options >Auto Thumbnail - change the size of an individual image via the Picture Properties dialog box - if you resize a photo, you must maintain its aspect ratio otherwise it will become distorted. - resample an image after you change its size. But only resample it once to keep its appearance halfway decent (if you want to change the size after you resample, use the " undo" arrow to bring the photo back to it' s original imported size then resize and resample again). gail

Dave: What I did was I went into Picture Publisher 9 and auto did the fix ups of them. Some I liked what the program did and kept the fix, others, well I thought that they looked better before the adjustment so undid the adjustment. I have photoshop 6 on here. I guess after reading what you wrote my question would be, should I do this all in photoshop? I had used the gallery in front page, and thought that this would do all the compression etc for me.(Sorry if my thoughts are jumbled, I" m having a problem connecting what I want to say with my thought process here.) I had taken a course on the web on graphics, a very basic course, which through the middle the instructor changed a bit for the worst. So the original way that she had it set up I was unable to finish. Anyhow, in there I had learned how to go into photoshop and do the changes to make the jpg web ready. I guess that I just assumed that the front page program did all of this. I know that the gallery makes the thumbs, so what happens to the picture that shows up when you click on the thumb? It almost seems as though it is compressed too much. Is there a way in front page to adjust the compression. Oh, btw, they are jpegs not gifs. But I can see what you are saying about the way that they are appearing in reference to the gif files. (maybe front page was just having one of those days and didn' t know what to do with the pictures) Although my husband looked at the pictures and didn' t seem to think that anything was wrong with them. I however, didn' t like how they turned out. Maybe I' m being to critical of my own work? Seeing that which really isn' t there?

ORIGINAL: c1sissy I guess after reading what you wrote my question would be, should I do this all in photoshop? imho, yes. If you set basic actions with the actions palette, it will go much more quickly. I record one action pallet for sharpening, one for brightness, and one for sharpening and brightness together. If an action is suitable for one photo but not the next, you can reduce (fade) the effect via the edit menu. Recording and applying actions in Photoshop is easy. Do a search in the help section for instructions. gail

Hi Sissy. I' ve never used the Picture Publisher program and Photoshop is an expensive item to buy. I' m intimidated enough with PSP7 but I absolutely love the ease of prepping photos for the web with it. If you can' t get them the way you like with PS give PSP a free trial and see what you think. I have a heck of a time learning it (Nancy is chuckling now) but I' m sure havin' fun. Dave

Hey EWD and c1sissy: I just remembered this feature. If you raise the setting the quality of your jpgs may appear better. AT the same time their file sizes will be larger and therefore take longer to load. However, if you resize them first as mentioned above, you may be able to improve the overall look. http://www.frontpagewebmaster.com/tm.asp?m=94951&appid=&p=&mpage=1&key=&language=&tmode=0&s=#94965 gail

Gail: I had a feeling that it had soemthing to do with the resizing. How do you fix that in front page? I had the pictures all fixed, except for sizing in the program with which I was working in. Then I went into the gallery, did the gallery thing with the thumbs and ick. I just wasn' t satisfied with the outcome. Maybe I" m being a bit too critical? nahh, dont think so. They sort of looked not too good.
