Is this normal? - 10/8/2002 1:08:47
Here' s the scenario. Last fall our web guy moved to a new server. Hadn' t really understood that just because he is hosting our site that he doesn' t actually host the site. Didn' t clue us in ahead of time, so when the move didn' t go as planned, (problems with cgi permissions I believe), we were down for several days, and had to retype in lots of info that was lost. Cost a few bucks for a new SSL and some other stuff. This was all done to provide a fully redundant server site. Last week, server crashes, and surprise, surprise, no backup, (they were supposed to perform them daily according to the web guy), no redundancy, no web site. Fortunately, I had my hard disk copy of the product pages and some other stuff, but not the shopping cart database. It' s taken one week to get " sorta" back on line using a several month old copy of the shopping cart. (means most of the prices are incorrect). So what am I missing here? Am I naive? stupid? gullible? What should you be able to expect from a hosting company and what should you have to pay? I generally need more than just the site hosted on a server; I also need some site cleanup when I screw something up. Regards, Scotty

I never rely on someone else to do my backups for me.....just in case....and unfortunately it sounds like you have had this " just in case" happen to you.... As for responsibilities et cetera, it all depends on what services are offered and what agreements are made. You can contract/hire someone to maintain your website for you - following terms that you outline or you can do the work yourself. Most web hosting companies are in the business of web hosting and if you buy a webhosting account - well that is all you buy. The web host will do back ups of their servers, but mainly for their purpose and not for yours. However some hosting companies do provide other services and you may be able to enter into an agreement with them to do the extras that you require. Now I say this - not really understanding what the role of your " web guy" is/was and what exactly was the reason for your move to a new server and stuff like that....however if I may say it again, I never rely on someone else to make my backups for me.... Justjay; My level of expertise has been to make a backup of the basic Front Page/html code pages. I hadn' t done the shopping cart db as I had no idea how, nor had I any knowledge of where/how the ssl certificate or any of the server permissions were set up. It was my copy of the pages that were finally used to load the basic site. Took them several days to figure out how to get the ssl certificatie and the other stuff re-permissioned et. al. You can bet I' m learning how to back up everything and requesting the necessary information on various server permissions. As to the change in servers; as far as I can ascertain it was done by the hosting company as a method to save money. (why use a server in Atlanta when there are so many options in the North West to pick from which is where we are located). Very frustrating for a novice. Regards, Scotty
