Hi

Just read throught the post Susan reffered to, there was a reply a couple of messages below:

quote:

None of this would be a problem if Google would recognize that people want to know where their websites rank for certain keywords and that there really is no way to stop automated ranking reports from running. Trying to stop it is a losing (if not lost) battle.
A simple solution to this problem would be for Google to provide some mechanism to show the ranking of a site for individual keywords. The webmasters would get the info they want (and are going to get anyway) and there wouldn' t be nearly as much of a toll on Google' s servers.

This is what really interests me in WPG or other similar programs - I can understand the toll on Google' s servers for the thousands and thousands of requests they would receive but it would be soooo useful to get that info quickly and rank it with a competitor or two.

Cheers
Andy

I' ll post a further reply sometime over the weekend. Before I do, I' d like to reference the same topic that Susan does but take you back to message #20 from GoogleGuy...

We' re you using WebPosition Gold?

Read the entire thread and you' ll get the general gist coming from GoogleGuy.

For those of you who are not familiar with GoogleGuy, he remains anonymous but is within a position at Google to get things done. Many have tried to guess who he or she is. It is confirmed that GoogleGuy is an employee of Google.

Hi All!

Once again I have info overload. Everybody in this thread makes a strong case, and I simply want to build a nice site to sell products. So I am one of those folks that will fork over money to Yahoo and Overture and simply focus more on traditional marketing. SEO makes my head hurt :)

Listed below are 3 more items to brain process [:p]

Umm...I' m curious as to what the " worse" is. Having just watched Al Pacino and Johnny Depp in a mafia movie...I wonder what the consequences could be? LOL

Update 2002-11-27

Google has made major updates to its Webmasters section now called Webmaster Guidelines. You' ll find tucked away a reference to the program discussed in this thread...

quote:

Don' t use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our terms of service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold™ that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google.

Thanks for posting this. I shared the thread with my client who seemed very interested in it...and she agreed that it would not be a good idea.

Have a great Thanksgiving, those of you who have the holiday tomorrow. If you don' t have an official Thanksgiving Day tomorrow...give thanks anyway...we all have much to be thankful for, even if it appears that we don' t.

From the " Death of a Meta Tag" article:
quote:

Newer search engines, such as Google and FAST, never added support at all.
So am I safe in assuming that inserting meta tags now is a waste of time?

BTW, this has been a very informative thread as usual!

Call me a hold over but some smaller ones still do. I still use the description and keywords METAs for SEO. Just a very small piece of the puzzle though.

I still use em too. I suppose if SEO were easy, then everyone would rank #1 [:p]!

Happy New Year to everyone! Long time lurker de-cloaking to add her two cents to the discussion on the WPG/SEO discussion.

>" so... can you use WPG to post to all SE' s except Google? and then deal with google separately?" <

barking mad, if you are referring to using WPG to submit your site to Google and the other major SE, I' ve used it in the past without penalty.

There are only a couple of search engines that will let you do this anymore; most of the larger ones have codes to decipher before you can add a site as a safeguard against automatic submissions. Since there are only a handful of " free" SE left and it only takes a minute to do, I hand-submit all my client' s sites.

If you are referring to using software that checks a site' s ranking on Google, I' d warn against this. I recently attended the Search Engine Strategies Conference in Dallas and the Google representative there flatly stated that Google DOES NOT like/want/condone/encourage/approve of automated queries.

If you do use a software tool to check rankings, just take a look at the Yahoo! and AOL results. Google supplies primary, secondary and directory results to AOL and primary search results to Yahoo! I' ve found that my sites rank on Google pretty much ( 99%) the way they rank on Yahoo!/AOL.

IMO, if you build a site to be user friendly, have well written keyword rich content , implement a quality link building campaign and use the appropriate meta tags, Googlebot will find your site without you having to submit it!

Debra.

Well, a bit belated, but I thought I would add my comments to the thread since I have used WPG for a long time. Anyway, it is a never-ending subject.

At first I used WPG' s page critic until I understood the concepts behind SEO, but now I only use the reporting function. Here' s an example of why.

One of my clients is typical of niche web sites. She cannot just target a big keyword like " job" , but rather has to combine over 30 geographic locations with about 10 functional areas. Out of more than 300 possible keyphrase combinations we narrowed it to 173 using the Overture tool.

Also, typically, the person who had developed the site used the same page title on every page, with no meta=keywords, description, heading tags, or prominent placement of keywords. Simple enough to correct.

The WPG reporter allowed me to demonstrate that the client could only be found on 8% of the keyphrases. If I had needed to prepare a report of 173 keywords on the top 4 search engines, it would have taken a long time.

Now I can rerun the report to show that we have already gained top-30 ranking on 35% of the keyphrases. The end result can be seen with a 3x increase in referrals through search engines. Every so often I can run the report again to show progress.

So, for me the reporting function alone justifies the cost of WPG. I also think that Google et al. are being disingenuous in trying to keep people from using technology to perform a perfectly legitimate activity: helping seekers of information find the providers.
