2002 Extensions across servers - 10/10/2002 18:14:27
We recently purchased a network attached storage server and would like to use it to hold files for some websites. We can configure it just fine in iis on our web server to point the home directory to a shared directory on the storage server. The problem occurs when we try to install the server extensions on that site. The extensions install without error but then anybody can open the site in FP and have full access. I suspect when the user connects somehow they are inheriting the permissions of the server computer to the files on the storage server, any idea on how to fix this?

First off, why are you running a site off an NAS? I' d guess because you have it configured as mirrored drives? Still, not the best choice, since most don' t have a redundant power supply, poor cooling and they' re usually IDE drives. If you have big files (like AutoCAD drawings or something), just use the NAS as a file server, and run the web part off a real server.

An administrator should open the site on the NAS in FP, and set permissions under TOOLS-->Security. This will limit the people who can browse and author the site.
