Word documents being loaded into a browser from a website - 4/17/2001 18:28:00
It pays to take notes when you read something interesting

I was sure that I had read that there is way to load Word documents onto a website, have a link point at the document and then have the document load into a browser.

If know that I have had documents load into my browser, or I think that I have

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks.

I do this almost daily. There is a pro/con to loading docs in a browser. The con really is space. Check the size of a .doc vs html vs pdf and you will see what I'm talking about. The other pro seems to be how the doc is rendered. If everybody were in a perfect world i.e. everybody singing to the same sheet of music, it wouldn't be a problem, but we're not.
Yes you can display .doc's, .ppt's . xls's and more, but if your concerned about compatibilty issues, and load time, HTML/XML and PDF may be a better answer.

It's a matter of browser version- only recent vcersions of Internet Explorer have this "feature" and I assume the machine has to have Office (or Word or Excel, etc.) loaded.

The reason I say "feature" is because we have run in to trouble with this. I post an Excel file that is a contact list (name, address, city, state, etc.) for our members. The idea is they can create mailing labels, fax lists, etc. What they end up doing however is opening the speadsheet in their browser. Then they call me to find out how to sort it or crop it or whatever.

Sorry, your web browser is made to "browse the web." I realize a Word document doesn't carry all of this luggage, but the previous reply is dead on- the whole world doesn't have Word 2000 or IE 5. Almost everyone nowadays can play an Acrobat file. Or should!
