Hyperlinks when publishing - 10/16/2002 19:24:14

Hi,

I am trying to publish a web (it works on my PWS system) and all goes well until the hosting site renames the home page from DEFAULT.htm to INDEX.html This is fine except all my Hyperlinks to the DEFAULT page remain unchanged and I then get Page Not Found Errors. I even tried logging on to the remote site and running the tool to fix hyperlinks but the result was the same.

Any ideas?

Regards

Why would you name it DEFAULT.HTM? Juust open the site, rename the page to Index.html , recalculate links and publish.

Here is my effort to try and give you a bit of insight and help you gain a better understanding of what is going on...hopefully you understand what I am trying to say below.

RE: Renaming index file

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When you publish to a server using FP - FP reads the parameters/instructions that are on the server, as there are a few things that need to be adjusted (for lack of an easier way to explain it...)

Servers are set up to look for a specific page name as the HOME page or INDEX page. Then when someone just enters in http://www.yoursite.com the correct page (your homepage) shows up. Servers can not read your mind as to what page you intend to be your home page, so it needs a standard name to look for....as such FP knows what page is your HOME PAGE and will change the name accordingly so that the server knows what to do with that page...

Some servers require, index.htm, index.html, default.htm or default.html - just a few examples...

Now does this help??? Or did I confuse you more???

Hello Trandel,

What type of server are you publishing to? It' s been my experience that a MS server usually want the home page of a web to be named default.htm and a UNIX server usually want it named index.htm. You could use search and replace to change all the references from default to index.

Best of Luck,

Hi,

Thanks to all for your replies.

What I did do was look up " The Complete Reference - FP2000" and found that if you name the hyperlink ./ instead of either DEFAULT.htm or INDEX.htm FP uses it' s automatic renaming feature to ensure that the link is to a home page.

BUT I dont know if this will work when I FTP to a non-FP extensions host - right now I can publish normally for testing purposes. If it doesnt work I will simply do the rename and recalc option.

Thanks

Tony Randell

sorry but if this is what your host is telling you it doesn' t work that way. it' s all in how you have the web server configured. you can have the " index/default.htm" page be " kissmybutt.htm" if you want as long as the webserver knows to look for it. this is a simple server side configuration.

if your host want the page to be index or default or what ever just make yours the same, recalculate the links and publish it up there.

Hi,

I know it doesn' t matter what the home page is called BUT an easy way to code all the other hyperlinks seems to be the ./ option. Then you just rename the homepage to whatever and no need to recalc.

that should work. or you can switch to dreamweaver and when you make a change it' s smart enough to ask you if you want to change the links site wide you say " sure go ahead" and you don' t have to worry about all that funny recalc stuff. :)
