can' t open web on server - 10/18/2002 1:31:07
Here I am with another problem. I want to open my web live from the server. When I put its URL in the open web dialogue box, rather than getting a prompt for the user name and password, I get an error message which says " this web is unavailable - it may be protected by a password" It IS protected, but why don' t I get the prompt to supply the password? Thanks.

What exactly are you typing? Have you ever been able to connect this way? Swirl

I am typing http://www.mywebsite.org Yes, I have opened it that way in the past, and I can open it from my laptop that way. Just for the heck if it, I uninstalled FP and reinstalled it, and scanned for viruses, and still get the same result. It sometime flickers the opening webserver message, but then goes directly to the error message. Any ideas?

Linda, I just figured out my problem and I was wondering if something similar happened to you. My problem is due to the fact that we just had a firewall installed on Friday. Monday I noticed I couldnt do live updates anymore (well I can but it' s a pain in the rear). Did you do anything different or add anything that could be preventing you from doing the live updates. Now if I can just find a workaround on the firewall. Tony

No firewall - I do use DSL, do you suppose that would make a difference? The laptop connects by phoneline, not DSL -= maybe tonight I' ll try connecting the pc through the phone modem and see if that' s it. Thank you for the suggestion! Linda

The settings are the same on both machines - open as a web folder was not successful. I appreciate your help - any other suggestions?

My guess is that your host has NTLM authentication enabled, and you' re accessing the site from outside the network. If that' s it, Have your host switch to clear text, and all will be well. t

I don' t know. That' s probably not the correct solution, but it was the only thing I could think of. Worth checking on maybe? t

DSL should not hurt. Maybe Cable. Now this is a possibility. Make sure you turn off all firewalls, ad-blockers and any other weird stuff before trying again.

This is making me crazy! I don' t have a firewall per se, but disabled Norton to see if that had anything to with it. It doesn' t. I don' t think I have any other " weird things" , but maybe you could give me a " for instance" . I can' t see anything on the Microsoft FP site that gives any hints on this problem, either. The problem is specific to this pc, so I suppose there is a setting somewhere that is wrong, but I don' t begin to know what to do to correct it, having tried all suggestions offered here. Any other ideas would be greatly appreciated, since this is where I do the majority of my Web work. thanks!
