Download site from server - 10/19/2002 0:51:27
Can anyone tell me how to upload my web site ? Publishing is no problem, but what if you need to bring it the other way because someone else has been working on it and you need to save that work...

Thanks, from an obvious Newbie

Publish back to your harddrive.

    Open site live
  • File - Open
  • Enter - http://www.yourdomain.com
  • **************
  • File - Save as
  • Enter - C:\some directory\some folder

Hi Gil,
Thanks for replying so quickly, I have tried doing what you suggested before, but the " save as" option is grayed out...I' m using FP 2002 does this make a difference do you know ?

Thanks

No, I' m using 2002 also and it works fine for me.

1. You are using Publish - not import?
2. The server does have FP extensions installed?
3.The URL might help us figure it out

May I assume this is still true of Front Page 2003? Everywhere I look it seems to be so.

I also had someone else make changes to my site for me (Flash - I don’t do it) and now I need to get the pages that were changed back to my local folder. My person told me to “download” the new files. Obviously she didn’t use FP because it doesn’t have a "download" option that I can see.

And the thing is, I don’t want to download every single file out there, just those pages she made changes to.

In FP, I viewed my local and remote side by side and there are a lot more files in the remote than in my local. Some of those I see are files I have deleted and do not want. I found it odd that they were still on the server for her to upload when she did so to work on the site. (Doesn’t the server purge those files? How do I get rid of them for future?)

But back to my main reason for being here...how do I only get the files that were most recently modified?

I tried “synchronize” and it looked like the files on my local overwrote those on the remote, which was weird to me since, for instance, the remote index.html was a more recent version than my local version of it. AND...I got a message saying there was a conflict in some files - which turned out to be my all of images, PDFs and Word DOCs! But I'm pretty sure we/she didn't change any of those types of files.

So, I was thinking I should do a remote to local transfer instead...but I have not tried it yet.

Have I given enough info? Can anyone advise me?

Thanks a BUNCH!

(p.s. I love this site. It's been most illuminating!)

It sounds like she's been using FTP to upload and download files. She's left a lot of the old stuff on the host.

Now, here's the problem. Yes publish still works in FP2003 but you need to have the Front Page Server Extensions (FPSE) enabled on your host in order to use it.

If they were enabled, it's highly likely that she's corrupted them by using FTP.

Get them reenabled, you may be able to do this via your cpanel if you have one.

Now the messy bit.

Take a copy of the site on your machine and save it somewhere safe, or rename it whatever, just make sure it's bullet proof.

Publish the remote site back down to your hard drive. BE SURE to select a folder like MyDocs/myweb and not the root drive or the name you saved your backup to.
Then you'll need to go through and get rid of all the files you don't want. Then go through and make sure all the links, pictures etc are working

Publish it back up and it should get rid of all the files on the remote that you deleted locally.

If not, with a working site on your hard drive, you should be able to delete everything on the remote and then publish to a clean folder

If you go to the top of the page you'll see a thin blue bar with a link to our tutorials. There are two in there for publishing up and publishing down.

HTH and welcome. :)

Messy...yes!

Our server DOES support FPSE and yes, she always mentions FTPing stuff to her. But, come to think of it, she has our username and password to publish with (I'm not the one who hired her). Does that mean she can use those to upload our site to her web program and work on it and then publish the pages when she's done? (Gad! I still have so much to learn!)

I just found out that she was only supposed to make changes to two pages.

I'll see what I can do for now and if I get into any more trouble, I'll definitely be seeking your help again!

Thanks. :)

It depends whether she's using FrontPage. If she's not then she has to use FTP.

Your big problem is that if you reinstall the FPSEs and then she FTPs stuff to the host, the FPSEs will be corrupt again.

Hm, I know our marketing guy has no idea about this stuff. I wonder if she has a clue at all. Come to think of it, I'll bet she doesn't even know what program we use to edit. Though I could swear I've told her myself. Who knows...

My stuff seems to be working fine though.

For now. :)
