The following components require the FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions:

File Upload
Custom link bars
Shared border background properties
Usage analysis reports
Top Ten List Web Component
New security features (user roles)
FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions Components

The following components require FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions or later:


Nested subwebs
Lightweight Source Control (document check-in/check-out without Microsoft Visual SourceSafe for Windows)
Categories component
StyleSheet links to multiple files or Active Server Pages (ASP) files
FrontPage Server Extensions Components

Additionally, the following components require at least an earlier version of the FrontPage Server Extensions:
Confirmation field
Discussion form handler
FrontPage-created server-side image maps
Hit counter
Registration form handler
Save Results form handler

Field set

Huh?

The " File upload" feature is a feature that allows visitors to a site to upload files to the server - has nothing to do with " publish" or FTP' g site files.

Yes, FTPing Frontpage sites to a server without the extensions works just fine - as long as you are usinf any of the features listed above.
However the Frontpage Import feature is a total waste of time and effort - simplt FTP the files from the server and get what files you want/need - import will NOT get all the files.

Gil - Whoops my apologies I misread the first line and jumped to confusions. For the kids I' m teaching import is the only thing they have, not FTP clients. I agree, import is only skightly better than nothing!

I can " Publish" to a FTP url that has NO FP extensions installed. Works on FP 2000 but don' t know if it works with later versions.

Actually Don, you can only " Publish" * to a server w/ the extensions installed - otherwise you are using FTP to transfer the files.

I was just thinking about this issue today, I' m so glad a thread was already started.

I' m using FP2000 and I want to get away from using the FP Publish and using FTP instead. I don' t know if this is common or not, but if I upload with FTP it royally screws up the extensions on my host server.

I have two quick questions about whether these options will work without any extensions. I know the list is up there, but I just want to make sure.

1) On the Background tab, will the " Enable Hyperlink Rollover Effects" still work or should I find a simple Javascript instead?

2) I' m pretty sure on this one, but shared border still work don' t they?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

It will still work. You could always accomplish this with a wee bit of CSS instead.

Yep. Just make sure you upload all the files and get them in the right folders.

Nope. 2002 is the last version of FP for me...

Without the Sahrepoint ext on a server I don't know if there will be any sustain difference between it and 2002. I would rather they make 2003 ext for people who don't want to deal with all the sharepoint crap. It's just not practical unless your a big orginization.

Yep - I find myself using Hopmesite more & more. But have been using DW MX a lot more lately.

I really think MS as gone too far w/ FP2003 - they have always thrown up roadblocks with the "MS Only" mentality - but this time they are out there some where.

Features? Hmmm, I'd say that's an objective call. But - DW writes much more valid code (no WYSIWYG editor will write 100% valid code)than FP does - DW treats PHP like a friend instead of an enemy[:D] It's a lot easier to transfer files to and from the server. And the integration w/ Homesite is invaluable.

I am publishing a simple page with a hit counter to a win2k server with fp2002 installed.

the page has the webb components :
hit counter
marquee

the marquee works
the hit counter shows an "x" and the word "hit counter"

I manage the server, what should I do to get the server side hit counter working ?

Install the FP Extensions.

YOu can use Adobe Photoshop and Image Ready to make rollovers and other effects that use javascript. Then you can just cut and paste that element into your site build in Frontpage, then use an ordinary FTP program to upload what you need to your non-FP-ext-site, and there you have it.

If you upload an FP site with FTP you should never upload all those extension folders. It screws things up royally. Just upload the pages, manually build the image directory (and other directories), and manually upload their contents as well.
