Photo Gallery help - 10/20/2002 3:11:36
I' m still working on this vacation site in front page. I managed to fix the problem that I was having with what the pictures looked like when viewing in browser.

Now I have this problem where when I open up in any browser except IE, the pictures open full screen when I click the thumbs. HOW do I keep them from doing this?

They look great when I open them in IE. I click on the thumb and they are just the size that I had wanted them to be. They also look great. No over processing look that I was getting before.

In the other browsers at full screen they look horrible!

I haven' t put it up as of yet, I' m still working it out on the computer. Maybe I' ll post it so that it can be viewd.

I was runing into a problem with the backround not looking right as well, however, I managed to go in :) and fix it. It had something to do with the tables. lol, Imagine me, the one how had such a problem with tables not long ago, fixing a table! lol.

I' ll load it up to one of the sites that I have on hold for practice things and let you know what the URL is.

Thanks Seventh. apprecaite it.

Sissy,

How big are your pictures when you put them into FP. Sounds like you' ll have to resize them. There is a difference between compressing and resizing.

Whatever graphics program you are using you can resize them before putting them in FP. Sometimes you have to experiment but as a rule if you resize a 1.5 to 2 MB photo by 50 percent, then compress it as a jpg, it will show up okay in any browser.

FP has a resample (resize) feature but I' m not sure how well it works.

You know, that just might be the duh that explains why this is a slow page. I' ll have to rework the pics.

However, how would that effect the way that browsers view the pictures? In IE, the picture is just the size that I want it to be, not the whole browser size. If I open up in the other browsers it opens up in full page.

Scarednewbie, thanks for the link on the tables. I really apprecaite it. Its strange how somethings in the learnig process clicks in and others wait for the dimmer switch to turn higher:).

Hi Sissy,

I' m not sure how the individial browsers render jpgs for viewing. When I first found out how to resize and compress photos in PSP though I had a lot of fun experimenting till pix looked good in IE, NS and Opera.
You might have to fiddle around a little but eventually you' ll get it. Don' t forget that if you use FP it automatically compresses photos a bit more so you may not need to do it in your graphics program or shut off the feature in FP.
If you have any questions give me a holler.

Dave

Dave:
I just might have to go into photo shop again to redo the pics. I' m sure they aren' t compressed enough due to the fact that in the reports view, this page shows as a slow loading page. I couldn' t understand why, I thought that maybe I had too many photos on this page. However, It could be the fact that they weren' t compressed properly in front page.

When I went in and did the touch ups, I had saved them at best compression, due to wanting to print these photos as well as put them on the page.

I' m going to need to go back in and save them at a lesser quality then for the web page. I' m sure now that this is what is causing my page to load slowly.

Although, I' m still not sure what is causing them to load full page in the other browsers. Would it be something in the html? I have read that if there are mistakes in the html that IE is the most forgiving of the browsers and will overlook a mistake in the html. However the other browsers aren' t as forgivng.

Sometime between today and tomorrow I' m going to redo the pics, then I' m going to load this to a site and see how it behaves. lol, would be good practice for working on a site already loaded onto a web!

Sissy,

I can' t imagine text taking up much space.
How many photos are on your page? I have one page with over forty thumbnails on it and it loads in about 29 seconds on a 56K modem.

If you have a lot of pics the culprit may be just one or two of them which are a bit too big. You may not need to resize and compress all of them.

Dave:
I have I belive 12 pics on this page. Not much text at all on here.
The report says that i have one page exceeding an estimated download time of 30 seconds at 28.8
The page size is listed at 64KB.

Now that this busy weekend is fading into the sunset, hopefully tomorrow I' ll be able to get this loaded onto a site.

Sissy,

64K isn' t really big for 12 pics. Sounds like you' re doing well. And 30 seconds over a 28.8 doesn' t sound too bad. That' s only 15 seconds on a 56K modem, a second or two on cable or DSL or T1. Maybe you don' t need to adjust anything.

Ok, so the size wouldn' t be the problem with the way that the browsers are displaying the pics then.

Thanks Dave appreciate your help so far! I think I' ll do a bit more work on this and then load it up and see what is happening.
