What Size Server is Needed? - 10/21/2002 15:12:24
Thomas B. suggested I post this question in this forum. Today' s Outfront Forum upgrade sparked my question:[:j] Now this sparks a question I have had on my mind since learning FrontPage. I have never gotten an answer from my web host that makes sense.. and perhaps ... Thomas or anyone when you get a moment you could enlighten me. What does it mean to upgrade the server? I have no real reason to ask this other than to know and then to dream... I have only had aproximately 6,000 visitors to my web site in 2 years but lets say one day there were 10,000 visitors in a day? Is this the place where the server size is important? How much do you know to get? and by the way - I think my web host package is one size only! When I ask the web host they said it was unlimited and the same price but from hanging out at OUTFRONT from time to time I have the impression the higher the volume of visitors at your web site the more it costs and the more server resources one needs. Could someone offer me a simple explanation of how this work? I would love to hear it.

I have just copied this over from the lounge to keep the discussion together. Winter -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- quote: FROM SPOOKY.... It is a good question to ask, but perhaps slightly different in our circumstances than yours. With a hosted site, you could be running 10-100' s of individual websites. Generally the host would weigh up the cost vs performance on the number of web sites they can host. An example would be the same as your home computer. If you had a Pentium II 500 with 128mb of ram, theres a certain number of programs you can have open at once and you may find speed deteriorates as you run more intensive ones. Upgrading your PC to a pentium III 1000 with 256mb of ram would allow you to run more programs and process them all faster. The same occurs with a single web server. Ill let the experts expand on this Ours is currently a dedicated server looking after our sites. As we grow, it could become an issue, so we get in early :) " End quote from SPOOKY Okay, that helps... so let' s say that OutFront.net and my little site are both featured on a special episode of 60 Minutes and Mike Wallace himself mentions both sites several times in a positive light. 1,000,000 viewers are now compelled to visit both web sites. What happens to these servers and respective web sites? My limited understanding is that because you have more power with today' s upgrade... and you are on your own server... 1,000,000 viewers will get the same ability to access the site we have today. My site on the other hand ... I am unsure of ... Should I now expect a bill for increased usage from my web host? Will the site still be accessible? Has anyone out there ever had this problem? I would just like to prepare! ... and I will post this to the server area... can I take this thread with me? < Message edited by winter -- 10/21/2002 3:38:26 PM > _____________________________ " All that matters is what we do for each other" Lewis Carroll

When you talk about SIZE are you referring to disk space (MB)? If you are; that is the cheap bit....HD are cheap! :) Bandwidth is what is $$$ so that is primarily what you are paying for.... so if you go over your alotted bandwidth - you will be asked to pay for the extra usage. Will your site remain available? - That depends on the policy of your host. Just remember that a million hits only really gets scary if everyone is downloaded a huge file on every hit, if you carefully design your site, and keep file sizes down, then you have extra breathing room.... Does this help at all?? Or did I miss the boat on this one???
