Server " strategy" - 10/22/2002 5:30:55
I recently read something and I need to find out if it' s accurate. First let me give you my basic plan. (Keep in mind I' m very new to this so I would greatly appreciate any problems you see in my overall plan too!) I have a local insurance agency. I have acquired domain names (around 30) that " surround" and branch out from my main site. As an example I have a domain name that lists the state of Florida, the county of Broward, and one for each of the cities in the county. I also have a domain for each of the products we offer. I have my primary site up and running. Now I intend to build each of the " sub" sites with 3 or 4 pages each, and link them to the main site. My original intent was to make all of the " sub" sites look so similar to the main site that it might go unnoticed that it was actually different.
1. The first thing I read that threatened my plan was that search engines would discount my links if the sites looked alike. Is that true? And would it really matter if the total number of my links were so small? (Only links from my other sites and maybe a few local external ones, Chamber of Commerce etc.)
2. Then I read that I should also use different hosts as links from the same server are also discounted by the search engines. Same question, is that true and with my limited links, does it matter? I' m, so happy with my host that I really don' t want to try others. Their price on multiple sites is very reasonable and they have a phone number if I have a problem. (Then they actually help solve it!) After a couple of bad experiences I' m very hesitant to " shop" hosts again.
My intent is to have a useful site with links that are relative. I don' t want to search for links that are irrelevant just for the sake of having links and I think it pointless to try to direct traffic to my site if they' re not looking for my services.

I have never come across ANY documentation that supports your stated concerns. In thinking about it as well, I am not sure how a SE would even support such policies....
