password protected pages - 10/22/2002 23:12:43
I want to put a few pages on our site for " members" only. My current hosting plan doesn' t not have ASP and I' d rather not have to upgrade to the next higher plan if I don' t have to. Is there a way to have frontpage create password pages without ASP and hopefully without buying any add on software? Thank you.

Hi Matt,

First, check to see if your host offers a " password page" feature in the web site control panel.

Second;
Since it looks like you are Unix/Linux hosted have a look here...

You may also find an answer [here] with CGI..

Check out this little java script, it works great if you are not looking for super serious protection. Offers multiple users and is free.

http://javascript.internet.com/passwords/multiple-users-source.html

I use this with this No right click DHTML script to keep others from viewing the source code and all of your passwords.

Hope this helps!

if you don' t have Asp I' m thinking CGI is the best way to go. Javascript and DHTML are easily hackable.

plenty free CGI here:

RE: password protected pages - 10/23/2002 13:03:42
Rian,
I created a sub web like it says then logged on live. I went to adjust permissions and I went through what I assume is the server extensions of my web host. I created a new user with browser level permission and set up a user name and password. It then gave me a page of html. I figured that I needed to paste that on to the index page of my subweb and then it would handle the login from there. I did that and when I try to view the page, it says " please wait while your changes are being processed" . Only that never ends. It just keeps flickering. Is the code corrupt or something?

Thanks for your help.
Matt

There is NOTHING that you need to be cutting and pasting when you are using this method!

Justjay. Okay, I wonder though what the code is that comes up after I set up the user/password/access level and stuff? Is there something then that I need to place on the actual " password" page like a text box form or something that will refer to the subweb? Or should it just work and create it' s own textbox for password entry?

Thanks!

Matt

That is what I was expecting. But just to run down what I have done so far...I created a subweb, then logged on to it live and picked " permissions" . I then set up a new user that would have browser level access and picked a user name and password, all via my web hosts frontpage extensions. Here is what I now get when I access that page.

I' m using netscape 7.0.

I not sure how to word this - but your code is no longer in Kansas!

What is happening is a referring/redirect script...you can get rid of that...just make your index.htm page of your MemberArea subweb a regular index page - with the password protection you will not need to worry about uninvited guests...(well it isnt fool proof but what are the chances of someone wanting to hack your site?)

well, I just set the page as a reqular index page. I put some type on it just so it wouldn' t be a blank screen. I made sure all the settings were still the same through the server extensions and still no password box pops up. Is there anything I actually have to set up through FP itself and not just the server extensions?

Jay, quick ?.
Why do you suppose that you are required to enter the user name and password twice before it allows entry? It pops up, you enter the info, and then it pops up again, then allowing you access. Not a huge deal but I' m not sure why it prompts twice. Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Matt

Did you take out any " funky code" in the now index page of the memberarea? It isn' t redirected is it? Are you checking the " remember" box?

Jahni,
Thanks for the code to create password protected pages. However, I am having trouble with it. I have followed your instructions and copied and pasted the code into the head and the body of the page. I use the user name of member1 and the password of password1 but every time I preview in the browser i get the follwoing error message:
Am i supposed to edit this code in any way to direct the password protected page to another page?
:)
