frontpage extensions for Apache on win2k - 10/22/2002 23:18:28
Hi... I' m new to Frontpage. It looks good. But I got some early problems. One is the requirement for ' frontpage server extensions' to make various frilly bits like the hit counter work. I' ve got win2k and I' m running an apache server on it. I had visual studio and IIS and frontpage extensions and it all hassled my machine so I threw it all away. How can I make things like the hit counter work? . Some way I can run server extensions? . Some other thing I can do? . give up and use other software to provide these gimmicks? regards, abrogard.

Arthur, You won' t use FrontPage hit counters without server extensions. You also won' t use: - Discussion forums
- Search Component
- Table of contents
- Feedback form with the associated confirmation page.
- etc.
FrontPage Server Extensions is software that lives on the Web server and gets involved whenever communication takes place between your Web and the Server. They ensure that FrontPage components work the way they are intended to. Read the Tutorials. You have thrown away things before you understood their purpose.

I found the Front Page hit counter to be ugly anyway. I have a hidden hit counter from Simonbots that I really like. It' s a FrontPage add in. I believe I posted a link to Simon' s site in the Resources forum. I have also learned that some servers, like Verio, will not run some of the FP extensions--a client of mine wanted a discussion board, and Verio said we couldn' t use it on their server for security reasons. I assume it has something to do with that big security bug. I thought there was a patch that the servers were supposed to get to fix the bug...I don' t understand what' s up with Verio, I don' t really care for them anyhow.... but anyway...there' s my late night opinion for what it' s worth.

I had visual studio and IIS and frontpage extensions and it all hassled my machine - Either the machine does not meet the minimum specification requirements or the software was not configured properly. quote:
How can I make things like the hit counter work? - You have a few choices. - Re-install IIS and configure properly with FPSE for IIS, maintain your FP web according to the necessary guidelines
- Continue with Apache, download FPSE for Apache and Install and configure properly, maintain your FP web according to the necessary guidelines
- Do a search for cgi, or other script, hit-counters, configure and upload them
