RE: Merchant Account - 10/25/2002 14:32:08
I have to speak up here: I have used Card Service International, Payflow and Authorize.net. My experience has been the opposite of Thomas' s. Yes, there have been ' upgrades' , but I' ve been notified by email of each upgrade prior to the upgrade being implemented and in plenty of time to prepare and make any adjustments needed. With Cardservice and Payflow, I would have any where from a few to a lot of disputed charges every month - I' ve never had one w/ Authorize.net I can' t really speak about the support of Authorize.net, because I' ve only had to call once in three years and that time I got a very helpful person - maybe I' m just lucky Thomas is right about Cardservice having more features, they' re just not features I used or need. I happen to prefer Authorize.net' s reports, but that' s a matter of preference. For recurring billing, I use a simple batch script. I' m sure it' s a matter of experience and personal preferences, but had to balance the scales here, Thomas.

RE: Merchant Account - 10/29/2002 10:09:04
This concerns the security problems associated with using e-mail to receive credit card details. I have created a site for a non-profit group who is interested in receiving on-line donations. They have have access to a secure server and they have an 0ff-line merchant account. They are on an extremely limited budget and would like to avoid the costs associated with an on-line merchant account. They want to be able to retrieve on-line donations and process the CC info off-line. If e-mail cannot be used to transmit CC details is there any way that they could have the information submitted to the secure server and then retrieve it by other means? They have heard from other non-profits that receiving e-mail credit card info is not any less secure than telephone orders, etc. This is new ground for me and I' m not really that familiar with the issues. Any advice? Thanks in advance, Judy

Any advice? Do a spreadsheet detailing the cost of " off - line" and " on - line" transactions. You will be amazed at how close it is. As the developer, if you go the unsecured route make sure you have good omissions and errors insurance.

i' m looking at an cc processing alternative. I too would like to cut out the processor and manually input cc details AND receive the details via email. You can do this using PGP. Jmail has a PGP component that will encrypt the email before it leaves the SSL and arrive encrypted in your inbox. only the person with the key can read it

I would recommend getting a merchant account for your online business. The thing with Paypal, is that it is not a true processor or bank. It is not FDIC insured and funds are held easier. Your customers build a relationship with Paypal, and not you as the merchant. Diane Kraatz

Judy, As long as they have a merchant account, this will work: http://www.mals-e.com/ I use the free cart for a non-profit and they love it. They retrieve the info from a secure server and enter it at their terminal in the office thus avoiding any online processing charges.
