Actually I KNOW I' m not really ready, but I' d like a little feedback on this site I' m doing just for fun and practice. (This is being hosted by my ISP and that' s why I' m using their form for submitting recipes. I don' t believe they support FPSEs or ASP or databases.)

http://home.att.net/~marissa.travis/

This is my salsa site and doesn' t have much in the way of actual content yet. I' ve wasted a lot of time on the graphics, which I' m not very good at.

I would like some general opinions and feedback on the overall appearance and any other tips you' d like to pass along.

Don' t worry, I can take the heat! :)

Nice start.

The links not changing color when the mouse is over is confusing to most people - they have come to expect it.

You need ' alt' attributes for all your images.

Hey - what a great topic for a web site! Love the idea!

You' re doing a great job - I' d love to see it when its complete.

I think that you have already confessed that the graphics have taken more time that they probably should have, to the neglect of content.

I noticed that the links on:
http://home.att.net/~marissa.travis/Nutrition.htm

aren' t active.

I would also take the mailto: email address off your pages and substitute it for a contact form. the Spam bots are sure to get you if you leave it like that. It' s only a matter of time.

Thanks for the feedback. I have already made a note about the contact form vs. e-mail link. I' ll get to working on my content next as well as " alt" attributes text. I' m not completely satisfied with my links and rollover either so I' ll decide what to do about those.

Thanks Gil and Micah.

Hi Marissa:

Might I suggest that on the ' Links' page you have your off-site links open into a new browser window? That way your site stays open in the background.

Also, I' d like to see your standard left side navigation continue through to the actual recipe pages for the sake of continuity. On the " Frugal Gourmet' s Homemade Salsa" page for example, you switch from left side navigation to bottom. (Perhaps this is in transition and you' ll get around to it, but perhaps you wanted it so... it' s hard to tell when a site isn' t finished and we can' t read your mind about what your plans are.)

Also, I have a personal pet peeve about links that become physically larger when moused over. The fact that your links switch from regular type to all caps on mouseover means they take up more space on mouseover. I' ve seen pages where this makes for a real mess as the mouseover ' enlarging' effect makes nearby text scrunch over and distorts the micro-layout of the area surrounding that link. I may be wrong on this, but it' s my hunch that this effect will really vary widely with different browser settings.

Glad you can take the heat. I wouldn' t want you to leave this kitchen. :)
Have fun!

Now you' ve hit one of my " pet peeves" [:p] - I' m perfectly capable of opening a link in a new window when I want, I don' t need someone making that decision for me!

Good point Gil, and I agree completely. But most folks, in fact, ALL folks I know who are average users do not know how to do this, or would not be so inclined to do so. Really, truly.

I make an effort to sit with ' regular users' whenever I get the chance, with the specific purpose of watching how they use the web. I sit back and watch them surf and see how they move through search engines, sites, pages. I watch their brains at work (or not) and try not to make any comments so as not to intimidate. I have found the average user who doesn' t use the internet at work will not click their links open into a new window.

Great to hear how we all have such varied responses to things eh? I really appreciate all your insightful comments.

Helene,

Thanks for your opinions on the mouseovers. I was playing around with this and as I said in an earlier post, am not quite satisfied with the effect. Maybe I' ll go back to the standard hyperlinks.

I don' t remember why I moved the navigation to the bottom on the recipe page. I' ll take a look at that too.

**************

By the way, it looks like I' m going to get some recipe contributions from at least one of the sites I list in the links (or " buy it" page, I don' t remember which). I e-mailed them all to tell them I' d like to link to their site and one of them said they' d send me their favorite recipes! [:p]

Marissa,

I agree pretty much with what has been said so far.

You' ve got a really great site going. While normally I am not a big fan of the bright red/yellow color combination, I think you have really made it work. It' s clean and easy to read and the color is not hard on the eyes.

I think one thing that would help would be to set the topmargin, leftmargin, and rightmargin attributes of the <Body> tag to Zero. For some reason, the white around the edge of your yellow logo area just doesn' t seem right...but maybe that' s just me.

Also, on the hover of your links, I would NOT change to All Caps or a different size font. I would just change the color or remove the underline on the hover.

Really cool (...I mean ' hot' ) site. :)

Good Luck.
