new server won' t remember user name and password for fp - 10/28/2002 11:09:42
My new server acts funny. I can no longer click the ' remember user name and password' button when logging into frontpage 2002. Also, I have frontpage' s hit counters on every page and they don' t work either. Do you have any suggestions?

Did you publish or use FTP?

Can you provide a URL?

I published it. I don' t know how to ftp:)

The url is www.saskads.ca
It used to work before I changed servers. How do I change the user name?

First off, did you publish to the new server yet or are you having trouble even getting that far? If you cannot seem to publish to the new server, this is how it should go:
1. open your Web.
2. go File>Publish Web. A Publish Web dialogue box should open.

It' s important to note that whenever you close FP, you essentially log out of your session. So each time you re-open the program you' ll need to log back in with your password.

3. if you see a dialogue box open that requests your password but the name is filled in, then hit cancel and then cancel again on the whole create a new web thing.
4. now, on the enter publish destination dialogue, where it says " type in publish destination" , type the http://www. . . web address of your site.
5. Once you click " Okay" you should be prompted for your name and password. Use the ones provided by your new host server.
That should get it!:)

Now, all that said, all this is contingent on the fact that you' ve provided your new host with your DNS settings. If you haven' t done that, you need to back up a smidge and try all this again.

Not sure I completely understood your predicament, but I do hope this has helped.

Here is my problem, the site works fine, it is already published nd online. But everythime I open the site live in FP I have to re-enter my user name and password.
Nomally in the user name and password box, I have a check box asking me if I want to remember this user name and password, so next time I open the site in fp all I have to do is hit okay to login.

When you say " open the site live" do you mean in preview mode or in preview in browser mode" ? It shouldn' t ask you to log in either time. The only time FP should ever ask you to log in is when publishing your pages.

You know, you may want to check with your site host. Do you have your own server or a virtual host? It may be some kind of setting on their side. The only thing I can think of without seeing what you' re going through is that there is some kind of setting on your server' s side requiring you to put in your password.

You may want to check with them on that. I have tried to view other people' s sites with FP and have been asked for a username and password because the site didn' t recognize me as the webmaster. That may be the case in your situation.

Check with them and then come back to the forum. We might want to get others involved who are much more experienced than me.

Are you opening the site " live" via FrontPage or Through IE with the " Edit in FP" button?

What kind of server is your site hosted on?

... should that be: On what kind of server is your site hosted? [:j]

If the FrontPage hit counters aren' t working, I' d say the FP extensions are either corrupt or not installed properly... but in that case the " publish" command usually doesn' t work either... (that may be part of the problem here...)

I would contact your host and ask them to verify that they have the proper extensions installed (and installed properly)

Do you use any other FP components on your site? Like forms or hover buttons, FP Includes, etc..?

If so, check out the pages with those on them... if the server extensions aren' t installed properly those will be buggy as well...

Hang in there!

Okay, it doesn' t look to me like extensions, the feedback form looks okay... I' d ask them anyway.

There still may be a setting of some sort that they have not activated, or have deactivated for one reason or another...

Is the " remember..." option greyed out, or is it gone completely?

Have you made any other changes? New OS, new firewall, new version of FP..?

Nice looking site, by the way!

This is what I get when I try to open my site live through frontpage.
(sorry about the colour I had to decrease the file size)
Normally there should be a check box, to remember the user name and password.

perplexing... :)

And I assume that you don' t get a " remember..." prompt after you start entering the username and password...

Hmmmm.....

What happens when you open the site locally and select " Publish" same thing?

Are your steps for opening the site live:
" File>>>Open Web...>>>Double Click on www.saskads.ca" ??

Make sure that " Look In: Web Folders" is selected....

Mine does the exact same thing. Have to enter it every time. I finally gave up and just accepted the fact.

Sorry

I' d just upgrade to 2002. That or re-install 2000. Re-installing is like re-booting. It seems to be a magical duct tape solution that works like a charm.

one question if you put in your user name and password does the site open? if so i don' t see a problem, just a slight inconvenience.

Bobby) Same thing happens, when site is opened locally

Rian) That is how I open the site,

Gene) If I am stuck with typing it in, is there a way to change the user name, the host gave me a real awkward one.

Little Man) I am already running fp 2002

Shirley) It used to work, but right after I changed hosts, it stopped working. Therefore I would assume it is the server.

Storm) yes, I can still open the the site after I type in the user name and password. Inconvenience????...it is like having a car with a broken door handel on the drivers door, so you have to get in the car using the passenger door...you can still get in it is just an inconvenience.[:p]

What else guys???

Thanks for all the great responses so far:)

Maybe try this?

Based on these two things, if you have not yet contacted your host, you should do so before going any further. They should be able to easily change your username and/or password. And I suspect they may be able to fix or help you trouble shoot the problem further.

My host welcomes customer support calls and is always helpful when it comes to this sort of thing. Yours should be willing to help to that extent as well. CALL THEM! :)

Here, here Bobby! FTP has its uses, but otherwise generally bites in comparison.
