Suggestions & feedback for redesign - 10/29/2002 11:30:37

I' m redesigning my own site and request feedback please on the main template which is in early stages of development. Just about no links are working.

In addition to general feedback, I' d like some comments relating to the following:

www.gtbdesign.com

thanks! gail

Well, gail, I' ve got mixed feelings.

The colors (which are pretty much the same as the original) work well but there' s too much white space. I think it' s more of a layout issue as the ' linear' aesthetics seem off. By linear I mean there are so many visual levels that seem to give the effect of ...what' s the word... ' broken' graphics. It seems like the placement is all wrong. If I' ve confused you I' m sorry but I seriously can' t seem to put my finger on it.

Anyway, on to part 2 of your question.

quote:

I' m trying to figure out how to make the overall appearance look ok at resolutions higher than 800 X 600 pixels. I don' t like all the space at the bottom when viewed at higher resolutions. I' m assuming it doesn' t layout well either on monitors larger than my 17" screen.

To put it simply, the size of the monitor is not as important as resolution. 800x600 on a 17" monitor is about the same as my 21" monitor. Just a tad bit bigger, but it' s still 800x600 resolution.

I' ll look at it again later. Hopefully I can better express what it is I see.

Gail,

I have a 21" flat screen monitor at 1024X pixels. When the browser window is set to maximize, your page only fills about 3/5ths of the height.

If you have followed my previous posts in these forum threads, you know that I like larger text. Even when changing the IE6' s text size, no help. Same is true in NN 4.76. Opera 6' s Zoom enlarged the text to a legible size, but also distorted the text links. NN7' s text zoom feature performed perfectly in enlarging the text without changing the navigation text in the upper left.

I suggest that a darker shade of color for the fonts would help. I' m sure that the majority of your prospects are not yet at my 72 year stage, but I wouldn' t want to write off a client, because I thought my site was legible to me.

I like both the " GTB design" and " Web design" graphics.

Thanks for all the great input.

Seventh, I' m still pondering and working on the layout. You were right on about too much white space. I reduced the width of the main table to see if that helps, also enlarged the spread of the gradient in my logo.

Charles, I really need to figure out the " 3/5ths of height problem." I have the same problem with one other site and it drives me up the wall. One fix would be to add more content, though I' m not sure I want to. Any suggestions here?

I' ll be working on the text size and have already enlarged some of it. I plan to make the text darker and/or perhaps change the font style. I' ll redo the gif text used for the upper page links. Not even sure I even like them any more.

Do you fellows have any input on the color scheme? Too feminine?

Would much appreciate additional input.

gail

Can you set your table height for 100%? (I may be showing my ignorance again here...sorry... :-) )

I like the color scheme; it' s cool and clean--looks very professional. And, I like the graphics for the navigation...

I agree with 7th that there' s too much white space.

Thank you all kindly for the input you' ve given me thus far on the redesign of my website! I' m removing the site for further review until I get a few issues resolved. I' ll request help at a later date and hope you will continue to provide your much needed and appreciated input at that time.

thanks, gail

ps peppergal, I do not believe I set the table height for any of the major tables.
