google toolbar - 10/30/2002 10:17:23
It' s free! Knew I' d get your attention. I' ve used the google toolbar for a week now and it' s fantastic. It will do a search on just the site you are viewing and give page ranks for that search. The highlight feature makes it easy to find the information you want on the pages. It has a lot more features as well. I used it on my webs and found pages I thought were well hidden. Gotta do some more work there. You can learn a lot about your site looking at it this way. http://toolbar.google.com/ Happy Surfing!

Yes, but... There are a couple of versions of this toolbar. As I have an innate aversion to anyone tracking my Internet voyaging, I have been using the version " Without the Advanced Features." Gives you almost the same functionality (I agree, it IS cool), but without the spyware. Speaking of, I' ve been using Ad-aware (and now Ad-aware Plus) on my computers and it' s VERY scary how many tracking cookies are downloaded from most websites. Virtually every time I visit yahoo, MSN, ATTBI, ESPN, etc, I' m deluged with attempts to install double-click, alexa, and other cookies. The first time I ran Ad-Aware, it cleaned 28 spyware files and registry keys! -S

I installed without the advanced features and have been quite pleased. I am less freaky about getting tracked if the features are rich enough to be worth it. But in this case, they were not. quote:

I make IE tell me when I' m getting hit for a cookie everytime. Sure, it' s a hassle, but folks jumping on my computer for their own satisfaction doesn' t settle well with me. I also use another program called ZoneAlarm that blocks other servers from accessing my computer. Now that I have it, I' m shocked to know how many times someone' s trying to get in. Fortunately, I don' t have anything they would want so it wouldn' t matter anyway. Sorry to go off on a security discussion. The Google toolbar is pretty neat. The other thing I like about it is that if I want to do a search, I don' t have to open a new browser window. Just highlight a word and click search or type it in the toolbar. Laters, LM

I also use Zone Alarm. In fact, with my always-on cable, I use a Linksys router for DHCP, ZoneAlarm, Ad-aware Plus and PopupKiller. For a while I wondered whether I was just paranoid, but one of my roles at work is managing corporate security. It is UNBELIEVABLE how often both my home and company network get attacked. Whether it' s the now-5+ virus emails a day at home or the 20+ at work...or the ubiquitous spam...or the dozens of tracking cookies...it' s just frightening. Last year, my senior tech and I spent 100+ hours each one week cleaning Nimbda off our network (got it before Symantec, et al knew about it) and vowed it wasn' t going to happen again if we could help it. Anyway, that' s my rant. So, google advanced may be benign, but I' m not letting anyone in the door. -S
