subweb / server problems - 10/31/2002 4:47:32
I have created various folders in FP2000 which have been uploaded to my site with no probs... however, i recently had my hosting company set server side u/n' s & passwords in order to protect the contents of certain folders (they are student only areas - each with their own u/n & p/w)... sounds simple enough.... to cut a long story short it caused some problems and the hosting company eventually created FP subwebs on the server and gave me admin access... so i now have folders, converted to subwebs on the server, with permissions if you will.... so - in order to upload any updates to the pages contained in those folders I need to convert the folders to subwebs - which i have done as distinguished with the ' globe' folder... however, when i try to upload via FP2000, it will not let me, reading " server error. (folder/subwebname) does not refer to a page or folder in this web. It may be a page or folder in a subweb or it could be a badly formed url" I have tried creating the subwebs a host of different ways with no success... I can ftp the pages, but it' s a pain.... and i have checked the " include subwebs" box for uploading.... Does anyone have any ideas how to avoid this? It appears that it is not recognizing the fact that i have created sbwebs for some reason? thanks in advance Emily www.thevsi.com

Hi Rian, I have converted the folders to subwebs on my local machine.... but I get the same message? I' ve tried converting the folders to webs by the right click " convert to web" and have also tried creating a new subweb from scratch and copying the files over to it.... still no joy. When i open files through FP it shows that the folders are subwebs (with the globe)... however, when i look at the folder list... it shows as a folder, not a subweb? Any thoughts? thanks Emily

I am a newbie... treat anything I say with caution... I had the same problem with my little thing here.. publishing to my own local machine. I figured all these hassles with fp are because of the info it keeps on the site in those directories it adds in. I figured I screwed something up by editing the site directly - I think it is forbidden to touch your site once it is an fp site.. So I deleted those directories. then I made a new web on fp. Then I imported the web with the problems. Then I published back to it. It made, of course, a whole new set of directories and the interaction back and forth was problem free. Then I imported the changed files I wanted to update the site with. Then I published them to the site. Probably using a sledge hammer to open an egg.... i don' t know any better at this stage..

Won' t let me publish that way?.... I had a thought... I don' t have a file in the subweb called " index.htm" as i re-named it something else before i converted it to a subweb.... could this have anything to do with it? I' ll give it a whirl and see what happens.. Weird thing is... everything uploads hunky-dory until i have the hosting company set permissions (and creating a subweb on the server)... then it doesn' t allow me to upload changes through FP?... It' s like it doesn' t recognize it' s a subweb on the local machine? thanks for trying.... Emily

The directories that Frontpage creates are necessary for the extensions to work. Passwords and user names should work perfectly on Linux if that' s what your host uses. Users, passwords, and permissions can be a nightmare on a Windows2000 server, especially if they break. Can U provide site or server details...

The site is www.thevsi.com - students take a course and are provided with a usernme and password for the particular course they have purchased.... accessed through the student only page www.thevsi.com/studentonly.htm A box then appears for them to input u/n and p/w as the FP subwebs on the server have set permissions... As far as I am aware it is a Windows2000 server. If everything is uploaded and then I create the subweb through the FP admin server, it all works fine.... however, if i make changes to my local files and want to upload them... it will not let me once the subwebs are created and the permissions are set... even if i have converted the local folders to subwebs, or started them as subwebs from scratch.. ??? Thanks All....

Once that is done and you have created the web folder on your system then the users and passwords are administered from Frontpage independently of the main web. It should act like a completely separate web. Back-up everything first. If it was me, I would just have them remove the subweb and all of it' s associated folders. Remove all of the users and passwords. Have them Re-create the subweb. Get the subweb hooked up with my system, then re-create the users and passwords in frontpage.

The hosting Co. gave me access to the FP server extensions for the site after I had repeated difficulties with the account.... The FP extensions had to be reset way too often... so i think they got fed up with my requests and gave me limited access to a number of features including the server health checks, subweb creation, etc. Although for permissions / passwords etc, I still have to have them set those for me. Sounds like this is not going to be an easy one... I can upload via FTP for those changed pages after the subwebs and permissions have been created... seems like this will be my best option... Thank you everyone once again for the glory of outfront! And if there are any other suggestions I always appreciate them Mahalo Emily

You should purblish the entire site starting from the root web and always choose the option to " purblish all pages overwriting any already on the destination" . It looks like the old folders still exist in the destination web. I think this idea will help. webis.
