/_vti_inf.html - What is this file? - 11/2/2002 11:17:30
What is this file? /_vti_inf.html Why does my web site stats program say it has visits to this file/page? I didn' t create this file and I don' t see this file in my web. Why would someone be viewing it? How would someone be viewing it?

I am not 100% sure, but that one may be the one that lets people know you have server extensions installed on the server.

If you view a Frontpage web with FTP or Windows Explorer, you' ll see all sorts of _vti folders and files. These folders and files are used by Frontpage and the Frontpage Server Extensions and you shouldn' t mess with them if you are using FP. Here is a quote from the /_vti_cnf.html file: quote:
<p><!--webbot bot=" PurpleText" preview=" This page is placed into the root directory of your FrontPage web when FrontPage is installed. It contains information used by the FrontPage client to communicate with the FrontPage server extensions installed on this web server. You should not delete this file." --></p>

Thanks for the info Doug. Why would this page come up in the stats program as a page that is being viewed regularly?

I think it' s used when you author or publish with FP. It' s used by certain FP bots and maybe that bot use gets it in your stats. I' m just guessing, I don' t know the answer for sure :)

Momx4, et.al., There are several files that begin with " _vti_" that are part of the control fields that provide communication between your web site and the server. The more of the functions that require FrontPage Server Extensions, the more you will find on your site. " vti" is the initials of Vemeer Technologies, Inc., co-founded by Randy Forgaard. VTI sold to Microsoft in 1996. FrontPage at that point had sold 289 licenses in two years. Microsoft' s FrontPage 1.1 (with sixteen days of packaging rework) sold 150,000 copies in just four months.

Wow, thanks Charles, You always give the greatest explanations. So when I publish changes to my site, the stats program is recording visits and hits. Thanks again.
