Any help is greatly appreciated! - 11/3/2002 1:13:25
Hi! I recently inherited the job of web designer for the bar my husband manages. I have no clue what I' m doing! Everyone I' ve asked thinks it looks great. (You should have seen it before.) But, I would really like the opinion of someone who doesn' t know me & doesn' t think they' re going to hurt my feelings. I' m really having trouble with the layout of the photo album pages. It' s hard to get the thumbnails small enough & still be able to tell what it' s supposed to be. [:j] Anyway...the site is www.denimdiamonds.com Any critiques, suggestions, etc. would be very helpful.

Welcome to OutFront, rollerskate! Well, if you' re looking for honest critiques you' ve come to the right place. So here goes. #1. Not sure what the cactus graphics have to do with the site. #2. I think Arial or Verdana would be a better choice of fonts. #3. I am looking at the site at a resolution of 1024 x 768. For me to have to scroll to read information at the bottom is simply bad design. I would suggest moving the content towards the top. This can easily be achieved with tables. #4. The logo could be better - and by better I mean a little clearer. It seems jagged. #5. I' ll try to do a simple mockup for you showing you the layout I think would help you out tomorrow. quote:

Ok...lots of great ideas here...but now I' m gonna need some help, because, like I said before, I really have no clue what I' m doing...I' m pretty much learning as I go. First...I like Anon1' s logo...I was thinking of going Red, White & Blue on the site (kind of keeping w/the patriotic cowboy thing). And you asked if the original logo was a thumbnail of a larger image...I guess the answer would be yes. We scanned it from some letterhead, I spent like 3 hours cleaning it up (one pixel at a time) in paint shop, and changed it from black on white to white on black & saved it as a bmp file. Is there a better way to import graphix in PageMaker?? Second...Peppergal said quote:
Some of your images need to be " optimized" so that they don' t take so long to download How do I do that??? Third...Thanks Anon1 for the frontpage layout...It looks great, I' ll have to try it.

...How does it look? Lookin' good...keep at it! Optimizing a picture: if you have Paintshop Pro you can just open the image in the program. Be sure the image is active (click on it) and then choose " File, Export, JPEG Optimizer" (or you can use the shortcut in your tool bar, JPEG in a blue arrow...) A higher compression value will make the file smaller (but it will also make your image lose some clarity...generally I don' t optimize over the 20 setting unless the clarity isn' t an issue then I choose higher...15 to 20 is the average.) Also, check the resolution on your photos...for the web the average resolution should be 75 or so (I' ve even had it lower on some pictures)...the default resolution on my scanner is 150...I always have to manually change it to 75. Once it' s in PSP, sometimes I resize it to an even smaller resolution, depending on the picture. I' m have no idea how to do it in Paintshop, but there are lots of folks here who use it and could tell you....just post the question on the graphics forum.

I would be tempted to use a color scheme to match (or at least, compliment) the colors of the building itself.....

I agree totally with LindaK about the black background. When I started designed web sites I thought that black was cool, however I went to Internet World and spoke with Vincent Flanders and we had a discussion on black backgrounds. I have since changed my ways. I really like what LindaK came up with. Angela http://www.ardesigns.com
