Windows or Unix - 11/4/2002 5:01:17
Hi,
I do not know whether to host with Windows or Unix. I have read several articles on pros and cons .... security issues ... etc etc, but I am still confused as to what one offers that the other doesnt ... i.e. asp - php support ... which databases etc etc. Could someone, very kindly, list for me what features each supports, also which of the FP features would I require Windows hosting that Unix would not support. Secondly, re databases - does it matter whetehr one uses SQL or MySQL (or whatever they are called) - does one do something the other doesnt. Hope my question not too confusing. We are just a small company and at the moment are unsure as to what exactly we will be having on our website ...... we will also be having a second website which will be a shop. Both websites do not have to be hosted on same type of server.
Thanks in advance
caywind

I prefer Linux. MySQL. You will find a lot of different opinions on servers and such, you may just want to try one or two and formulate the solution from there. One thing is that the ads won' t tell you much about actually running and maintaining a site, you need to get " hands on" for that.

I think you need to hire a consultant or a very skilled webmaster to answer all of these questions. Many of the answers will relate to your computer expertise or the depth of your IT staff.

If you want to go at it on your own, you may try a host and see if you can get it running and that will tell you what you need to do from there.

I have one Host that I find to be extremely full featured for the price and I found them here at outfront. Tech support is fast and knowledgable. www.thehostfactory.net The servers are Linux...
