Do cheap tricks work? - 4/11/2002 16:36:45
I am designing a web page for my school(special needs) for a university assignment. The whole site has to be 10 pages and fit on a floppy. I have included lots of photos but discovered that they are slow to dowload and are large files. I am reluctant to take most of the photos off. What I have done is created large thumbnail pictures and then removed the links. In the preview in browser the pictures look good in both IE and Netscape. This has dramatically reduced the size of the files. Will this trick work when I launch? Have I been too smart for my own good? I do not have a graphics editor and can't afford one. I am unable to publish my site at this stage as I need the final go ahead from the school board.

maurs if you would like to have them optimized send them my way. There have been plenty of folks help me along the way and I like to help out in return where I can. I use Fireworks to optimize all my web images no matter what program they were created in because it does such a good job so fast. Thanks for fast replies. Linda I am using FrontPage 2002. If I have Photodraw how do I access it? Thanks for advice resaving onto disc - it took me a while to figure out what you were talknig about but my brain has clicked in. Richard - thanks Email with pictures attached on way? If I can figure out how to do it. I have quite a few photos and they are all about 170 x 130 pixels. By reducing the dimensions of a picture - physical size - the size of the file is also reduced right? What I can't understand is why a thumbnail which is the same physical size and looks the same, as the original picture is so much smaller in bytes. Does this make sense to anyone? A quick and easy freebee picture manipulator program can be found at http://www.irfanview.com/ I've been using it for over two years - easy to install and lets you easily resize your pictures. Doesn't let you convert or optimize however.

Hi, Maureen - irfanview should work well for you. To look for Photodraw, put in the fp cd and it may give you the option to install it if you do a custom install. If not, you might browse the disk to see if it's there. If you can't find it, post a new thread in Graphics. I don't have FP2002... wish I help help more there. Linda
